Below are some recommended strategies to support improved flexibility.
Please review these techniques to identify what may be the best next step for your student!
Use a predictable and consistent daily schedule and incorporate daily routines throughout the day.
When considering assignments, attempt to reduce novelty or unexpected changes or demands. When introducing new activities, consider how “dry runs,” previews, and pre-teaching could be implemented.
Clarify expectations and demands by making easy to follow to-do lists for each day or week. Doing so will reduce how much the student has to flex when the demand is presented later on.
Walk the student through any new situations or situations that produce anxiety (e.g., tell the student what is likely to happen, what the expectations will be, what they could do if they feel stressed or need help).
Use warnings and timers in advance of transitions and before presenting demands, especially if the demands are unexpected.
