Beyond the Restart: Tourism in Times of Polycrisis

The period of post-pandemic recovery has come to an end, yet tourism has not returned to its previous mode of operation. The development of the sector is being shaped by interconnected economic, geopolitical, social, technological and environmental crises. Uncertainty, rising costs, disruptions to mobility systems, climate change, labour shortages, and the growing influence of digital platforms and artificial intelligence are jointly transforming travel decisions, business operations and the development prospects of destinations.
At the same time, polycrisis is not merely a succession of external shocks. It also brings the internal contradictions of tourism to the surface: the tensions between growth and sustainability, visitor experience and the quality of life of local residents, global mobility and climate responsibility, as well as between the benefits of digitalisation and its social risks. While some destinations are seeking to mitigate the consequences of overtourism, other regions face fluctuations in demand, the constraints associated with their peripheral location, or difficulties in retaining the value generated by tourism within the local economy.
The conference aims to provide researchers and doctoral students examining tourism adaptation, resilience and opportunities for renewal at territorial, sectoral, organisational or business level with a forum for professional exchange and the presentation of new research findings. Particular attention will be devoted to sustainable and regenerative approaches, destination governance, the transformation of tourism products, digitalisation and the role of local communities.

Registration and Abstract Submission
RON 250 (In-person participation, with registration and payment completed by 20 September 2026.) The online card payment system accepts cards issued in any currency. The participation fee will be converted into RON at the daily exchange rate, which is generally more favourable than the rates offered by authorised currency exchange offices. Fees charged by card-issuing banks may vary.
RON 300 / HUF 21,000 / EUR 60 (In-person participation, with registration completed by 20 September 2026 and payment made on site by 1 October 2026.)
The participation fee includes lunch on 1 and 2 October at the AJK cafeteria, the evening reception on 1 October at the AJK cafeteria, as well as coffee breaks and refreshments. The participation fee is the same for presenters and non-presenting participants.
