School Based Traineeship (SBAT)

Would you like to complete an industry recognised qualification in a field of your choice while you finish up your schooling? Want to engage in paid employment in your chosen industry at the same time? A school based traineeship could be a really great option for you!

You must be at least 15 years old

You must be willing to commit to your traineeship (work and study) at least 1 day per week (or as directed by your employer)

You must have a good work ethic

You must explore this option during subject selection in year 10

This option counts as a subject towards your NESA course requirements

There are a few things you'll need to do before becoming a School Based Trainee

If you are under 18 years, talk to a parent or caregiver. They will need to agree before you can start a traineeship
Talk to your school careers teacher about whether they offer SBT's. You will need their agreement before you can start
Choose a traineeship that is approved in your state. You can find this information in the Job and Training Description Search
Find an employer who is willing to take you on. The Steps to an Australian Apprenticeship gives tips on what to do
Once you have found an employer, an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network provider will need to do the sign up. They will talk to the employer, school, and if you are under 18 to your parent or caregiver.
