An example of direct action that I’ve seen recently are non-violent protests and marches for black lives matter and against harmful abortion laws. You can disrupt the status quo by doing not what is currently seen as right, but by doing what is truly right. If you do what you know is right, people will take notice and begin to understand and see errors in the system.--Noah
Whether or not you agree with their methods, climate activists are following a similar line of direct protest with actions such as their throwing soup onto paintings. This reminds me of the Greensboro sit-ins because both are demonstrating their discontent with the system through a shock factor. I think you can disrupt the status quo in the name of making something right by simply spreading awareness that you think something is unjust, and hopefully raising support through your actions.--Alana
In the status quo I’ve seen issues with accepting the lgbtq community. I feel as though you shouldn’t get discriminated against because of who you like or what you to prefer to go by. To make a change I can boycott and not eat at the places who don’t support lgbtq. I can get others to follow and lead with me. I can make a change by just believing and fighting for what i think is right.--Laniyah
I've seen many methods of activism in the past couple of years regarding different issues. Some of the methods of activism that I’ve participated in and have seen changes in are marches, walk outs, and demonstrations or protests outside of the Capitol. I’ve noticed that the more people who show up to these events, the better the result or turn out is. If enough people see the demonstration, the more people will see that there is a societal issue that needs to be changed. Speaking up is also something that is very important in today’s society. We all must speak up against the negative stereotypes. Overall, if we all join together and fight for issues that impact our lives, the more of a change we will see.--Naomi
When thinking about ways people disrupt the states quo in recent times, one example that comes to is climate activists throwing soup onto famous paintings to help gain media attention for their message. Ive seen disruption of the status quo mostly on climate activism. Ways I can disrupt the status is by standing agains’t something I believe is wrong in such a way that is brings awareness or enforces change.--Pablo
The A&T Four used a simple but powerful method of direct action that changed the course of history. Today, a similar form of direct action is seen in Iran, as women are cutting their hair and burning their headscarves in protest to combat the oppressive regime they live under. Though both actions appear uncomplicated, they both have and had drastic effects on their societies, creating conflict for the hopeful betterment of their lives.--Sarai
One example that I am thinking of are the climate change protests championed by Greta Thunberg. She began in a similar situation as the Greensboro 4; as a young person wanting to create change but being in a position of little power. However, by taking a courageous step forward, she has begun a movement that has spread across the world. Her actions have inspired and encouraged others to create change and be a part of movements they care about. Although Greta’s is the name we hear the most about, the movement could not have happened without the involvement of countless other young people, which is another parallel to the movement started by the A&T four.--Leila
A recent example of civil disobedience is the protests in favor of defunding the police. The slogan "defund the police" became popular following the racially motivated death of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer. The idea of the movement is to transfer some police funding to other forms of public safety, such as health care and education. People believe the police hold too much power and abuse it too often, which can clearly be seen in the death of George Floyd. I believe that the best way to disrupt the status quo is to get yourself educated. Ignoring society's injustices only causes more ignorance and sparks less change. As students, we need to stay critical and be the voice of reason.--Delia
