Study Island is a program designed to make taking the state-required assessments (the PSSAs) a little easier. It is also a great tool to help you see your growth on skills that may be new, may be a review, or may be completely different than what you expected!

You may have struggled with Study Island in the past - especially if you got a bunch wrong when you first tried, and had to work your way out of a "hole" to get to your ribbon. Guess what????? Study Island had so many teachers telling them about students having to do hundreds of questions to get to a ribbon that they CHANGED how it's done! It's SO MUCH better now!

Here's how it works:

In 7th grade, Study Island is done independently - that's right, you get to work on it whenever YOU want to! At home, in Flex, during activity period, whatever works best for you!

You will have different lessons that you need to complete for each assignment, usually between 6-8, and you will have roughly a month for each assignment (pro tip: don't procrastinate). Remember, you will get FRESH questions for every 10 that you complete - and you only need to get to a blue ribbon ONE time per lesson. So, if you try once and get a 3/10, then get an 8/10 on your second try, you're done!!

How is this different from just doing 20 question?

Well, think of it this way: if you do 10 questions and get a 3/10, you have a 30%. If you just do another 10, and get an 8/10, you would have a combined total of 11/20, or 65%. That's ok, but it might not get you a blue ribbon, or be high enough to hit the target. BUT, if you do it the new way, we would say, "Oh WOW! You grew from a 30% to an 80%! That's amazing growth, and you hit our target on the 2nd take! Way to go you! Here's full credit!"

You'll be graded on Study Island based on your performance.

If you get a blue ribbon, you get a 5/5 on the topic.

If you don't get a blue ribbon but tried the topic at least 3 times, it's a 4/5.

If you don't get a blue ribbon but tried the topic twice, it's a 3/5.

If you don't get a blue ribbon and only tried it once, it's a 1/5.

And if you don't try it at all, it's a 0/5. . . ugh.

Extra help for tough lessons. . .

Every once in a while, there is a lesson that is extra tough, especially if it is a new concept. In that case, I will try to add some resources to Schoology to help you!
