The challenge on this week's STEM club was to build the tallest tower that could free stand while supporting a weight. Materials were limited so designs had to be carefully thought out. 4 teams embarked on the challenge. After 45 minutes 3 teams had successfully built a free standing tower. One of the towers could rival the leaning tower of Piza and so despite being free standing was not necessarily the tallest. That left two teams, with the winners being James Almond and David Bernard, with a tower of approximately 90 centimetres in height.
In this week's STEM the pupils were challenged to build a parachute that would slow the descent of an object from a height of 1.52m. The winning parachute would take the longest time to fall. The design requirements were challenging, with a maximum area for the canopy being 124m2. After disqualifying some ingenious designs that bordered on breaching the rules of canopy size, we had 5 parachutes made within 40 minutes. The winning team managed a descent time of 0.855 seconds.
Day 2 in the Artic.
It has been very cold. Our clothes are not as warm as we were hoping they would be. We have a suitcase full of spare clothes, but which ones should we be wearing and why? A coat, a jumper, a T-shirt ... which ones?
Challenge: which materials, or combination of materials, will provide an arctic explorer with the warmth needed to survive.
We were given the task of designing an insulating blanket to keep a bottle of warm water from cooling down quickly.
We started our investigation by looking at the British Antarctic Survey clothing video and what being a blizzard looks like. Our inspiration was Captain Scott, who, with his team of scientists, set out to explore one of the World's most hostile environments.
After some research on which materials are worth exploring, we set to work marking out our blankets.
They had to meet strict guidelines of 150cm2.
It's not as easy as it looks!
We tested our blankets by wrapping them around our bottles. We poured slightly cooled water into the bottles, up to the top, and inserted a thermometer. We recorded how much the temperature fell over a 15 minute period. To help simulate being in the Arctic, we put our tray outside, where it is currently only 2 degrees.
It was really close, but team ALBERT won, having lost only 11 degrees! Whilst we waited, our teacher looked at the terms conduction, convection and radiation and how these are the ways of thermal energy being transferred.
Day 1 in the Artic.
It has been 24 hours since the storm moved in and Dr. Wilson fell ill. We have ample food, water, and other supplies; but the storm carried in much colder temperatures than we are prepared for. Our tents are not holding up well in this fierce wind. We must find a sturdier shelter right away. Perhaps we can build a large igloo like the Inuit people do. Surely all of this ice and snow can be put to good use. I will go ask the others what tools they have that might help us. Then, I must get to work before night falls...
Challenge: build the largest igloo possible using only the materials provided. The igloo must have a door opening and must not fall apart!
We thought about how what an igloo looks like, how it is designed and considered how we might recreate it using just marshmallows, water, scissors, sellotape and 4 tooth picks...
It was tricky and needed a lot of thought!
Marshmallows are not very good under compression or tension!
However, we got there in the end (sort of!)
