Week 3 - What Footprints Did We Find?!
Despite a week with torrential rain, some of our tunnels survived. We used a guide to help identify the footprints.
We were expecting to see mice and maybe rabbits. We really hoped to see something like a slow worm
The top tunnel caught lots of slugs! They seem to like paper!
We placed this tunnel deep in the College woods, and there are rabbits!
What we found interesting was that the tunnels placed next to the public footpath had almost no prints, the tunnels near logs had mice and only the tunnels deep in the woods picked up rabbits.

We unpacked the box with our 10 footprint tunnels in! They are very long and the special paint to capture the footprints is very black and sticky! We have been told that it is just carbon powder mixed with vegetable oil, so it won't hurt the animals who walk through it!
We made up the tunnels, placing white paper inside with strips of masking tape covered in carbon paint.
We then covered them with a sign to tell our pupils or members of the public that our tunnels were an experiment.
As bait, we added Oatmeal biscuits from the Staff Room!
We decided on where might be a good location for our tunnels. We decided on a mixture of locations: near a boarding house, in the woods, by log piles, and near public footpaths. We chose the final location based on which animals we expected to find there, or the presence of droppings (mostly rabbits!)

It's April and a carpet of blue has appeared in the Pangbourne College woods. Bluebells as far as the eye can see!
Today is Earth Day 2022. We considered the impact that we have on our planet by taking some quizzes on the Earth Day site. We learnt that 14% of all greenhouse gases are from transport, that only 1% of all clothing is recycled and that looking after our planet is now critically important.
We want to support our planet and ensure that carpets of bluebells through to the diversity of animal and plant species continues to thrive across the world.
One way of helping look after the planet is to become a Citizen Scientist.
We hope, this term, to make observations of insects and animals across our schools, but to get started we are going to help researchers in their nature projects through the Zooniverse website.
