River’s National Social Studies Honors Society, Rho Kappa, is creating history in the making. Sponsored by Social Studies teacher Ms. Nayyat Bogosyan, the club takes pride in doing all it can to showcase excellence in the field of Social Studies. As the sponsor of Rho Kappa, Bogosyan focuses on organizing events for members of the club, formulating creative and entertaining activities like Kahoot to engage with students and explore history and its importance.
“I chose to take on Rho Kappa because I have a passion for the field of history,” says Bogosyan. "During our meetings, we play academic games to bring history to life. In addition, students focus on the struggles and triumphs of those in the past. For example, during Black History Month students create posters to display famous figures and their achievements. Plus, students also have the opportunity to research about the Holocaust to showcase the horrors that victims and survivors went through," said Bogosyan.
Aside from diving into their Social Studies objectives, Rho Kappa and its members have explicit communal goals in mind.
“I think it is imperative to give back to the community,” says Bogosyan. “In the past, we’ve written thank you letters to veterans and teachers, and collected supplies such as canned goods for those in need.
Rho Kappa is far more than a club learning about the past. Rather, its members take pride in representing the club whilst bettering the future. With meetings, educational benefits, and community service, Rho Kappa is a fantastic choice of an Honors Society to take part in.
