Spanish River students pet the amazing therapy dog Negan.
London Bedell- Co-Editor-in-Chief
A heartwarming addition to the Spanish River campus has been making a significant impact on the lives of some exceptional students. Meet Negan, the therapy dog who's stealing the show and hearts of those around him - specifically students at our school.
Negan, a two year old pup of the Golden Retriever breed, has found his calling as a therapy dog on site at several locations, including Delray Medical Center, JFK Hospital, Greenacres Fire Rescue, and Spanish River High School. His journey as a therapy dog began when his mom and handler, Ms. Charlene, recognized Negan’s wondrous ability to comfort and connect with people, especially those with special needs. Since then, Negan has been visiting Spanish River students for the past two years at school.
For exceptional students, school life often presents unique challenges and emotional struggles. Therapy dogs help combat this displeasure by offering comfort, friendship, and help our students learn and socialize. Negan’s soothing demeanor and talents, for instance, create a safe and welcoming environment where students can comfortably be themselves.
“Negan instantly lifts spirits and gives smiles,” said ESE Teacher and Best Buddies Coordinator Angela Donnino. “If it can provide just a little comfort to our students, it’s worth it.”
Negan’s remarkability among individuals is noted not only for his physical attributes, but also for his behavioral features. Unlike the typical pet found in an American home, Negan’s training and certification enables him to adopt an unmissable calmness and kindness while engaging with students - or anyone for that matter. Those who see Negan regularly can concur that his presence brings irrepressible happiness to all around. This being said, it is nearly impossible to not admire Negan for his charismatic qualities.
A group Negan particularly excels in communicating with is the deaf or hard-of-hearing students. While some students may have previously feared animals - specifically dogs - Negan has assisted them in overcoming their worries; now, students regularly go home excited to tell their family and friends about their encounters with the therapy dog.
“It’s a beautiful thing,” Donnino continues. “Negan has brought happiness to our students with the most challenges.”
Negan is not just a therapy dog; he's also a bridge that fosters communication and interaction among students. Students who may struggle with social interactions find it easier to approach their peers when Negan is nearby. He breaks down barriers and creates a sense of belonging among students, regardless of their limitations.
As Negan continues to make his rounds at River, the future looks bright for our exceptional students. His presence serves as a reminder that compassion and understanding can come in all forms, not just a human.
