Let's Connect!
May has arrived, and around the PSD that means the calendar is full, the energy is high, and the memories are being made in real time. From Mother’s Day celebrations, award ceremonies, and end-of-year traditions, this season always reminds us just how special our Pirate community truly is.
As the flowers bloom and the countdown to graduation begins, we hope you enjoy this Patch-perfect edition filled with community, connection, celebration, and plenty of Pirate pride.
Following is a handful of photo highlights from recent events and activities. THANK YOU to our PTA/PTOs, Dawn Smigo, our athletic teams posting on InstaGram, our parent photographers and friends, our building principals, and Christmas City who share these photos for the newsletter every week. It would not be possible without you. You are appreciated! (Click or tap on an image to stop the carousel. Use the arrows to go forward and back at your own pace.)
Your guide to timely information in the Palisades School District.
This week, we celebrated the heart of our schools: our incredible teachers.
Thank you for the passion you bring, the connections you build, and the difference you make every single day. You inspire curiosity, spark confidence, and help our students navigate their journeys with courage and care.
Because of you, our schools are places where students feel seen, supported, and ready to shine.
Fair winds and full sails to our amazing teachers—thank you for all you do! 🏴☠️
This week, we celebrated the caring hearts, calming voices, and steady hands that help keep our schools healthy, safe, and supported each and every day.
From ice packs and bandages to comfort, compassion, and care, our school nurses do so much more than treat bumps and bruises — they are trusted advocates, listeners, and everyday heroes for our students and staff.
Thank you to our incredible school nurses for all you do to support the well-being of our school community. Your kindness makes a difference far beyond the health office walls.
Happy National School Nurse Day! ⚓💜💛

As many of you know, a local event as part of the America 250 year of celebration, is taking place on Saturday, May 16 at Tinicum Park (flyer attached). I sit on the planning committee and, in conjunction with many of our teachers, staff, and students, lots of Palisades-prepared components will be part of the day - from artwork, to historical videos, to a live band performance (at 1 PM). It should be a great day to celebrate the rich history of Upper Bucks and its influence on our nation's independence. You can find out more about the event here: https://www.buckscounty.gov/2199/Upper-Bucks-250-Heritage-Day-at-Tinicum-
Note: While this event is taking place at Tinicum Park, it is in celebration of the entire Upper Bucks region, so everyone in Palisades is encouraged to attend!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
We are looking for volunteers to help on the ground the day of the event. Set up starts at 8:00 AM and volunteers can sign up for a two-hour shift throughout the day until 6:00 PM. Volunteer activities include: assisting with parking, providing general information at the main information booth or assisting in one of the designated areas (tradition crafters, community organizations, performer’s stage, as well as greeters in the historic buildings). If you know someone who may be interested in volunteering they can sign up by clicking here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C094AABA623ABFECF8-63388357-upper#/

Find out what's happening in our schools! The Palisades School District is comprised of three elementary schools (Durham Nockamixon, Springfield, and Tinicum), Palisades Middle School, and Palisades High School.
Please help us complete our end-of-the-year community service project. Our school is collecting boxes of breakfast cereal for those in need in our community to help them get their day started with the most important meal of the day this summer.
Before we donate them to The Lord’s Pantry, we will be building a Giant Domino Fall in the school. The more donations we receive, the longer the line will be!
We will be collecting the items from Monday, May 18th to Wednesday, June 3rd, and we will do the great domino fall on Thursday, June 4. If you would like to help, please drop the donations in the DN foyer. We will also collect any other breakfast items and drinks if you would like to donate.
Sponsored by the DN Kindness Club.
The Palisades High School science department just completed a cycle of the new (very successful!) aquaponics venture to grow Rainbow/Steelhead Trout and edible and decorative plants in the same space in the classroom. The fish and plants were grown symbiotically as an example of building sustainable food sources.
This project was funded by a $5,000 grant received by Mr. Dylan Fedell from the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.
Trout roe were delivered to the classroom in January of this year. Of the 76 fish that were raised in the classroom this winter, 74 survived and were released (with a permit) into Tohickon Creek at Ralph Stover State Park with the assistance of a local wildlife conservation representative.
Thank you to our science teachers, Mr. Mark Chilton and Mr. Dylan Fedell, and to all of the students who participated in this wonderful project.
On Thursday, May 7th, our senior student-athletes proudly celebrated their Signing Day commitments alongside their families, coaches, teammates, and friends.
We are incredibly proud of all they have accomplished—both in the classroom and in competition—and we wish them continued success as they begin this exciting new chapter.
Be sure to check out the photo carousel above to see additional photos of each student, along with their college commitment and sport.
We are SO proud of you!
Our PHS Cybersonics team arrived safely home on Sunday afternoon after an amazing week in Houston, Texas where they participated in the world championship competition. In our division, we placed 13th out of 75 teams and were chosen for the playoffs. After completing two double elimination rounds, we were ultimately defeated by the other alliances.
The students learned a lot about the design and abilities of their robot and met a lot of wonderful teams from around the world.
Our standings for this year are as follows:
5th of 77 teams in Pennsylvania top 6%
7th out of 144 in Mid-Atlantic district top 5%
125 of 2944 in the USA top 4%
155 out of 3724 in the world top 4%
We are so proud of our team! Thank you to everyone for their support! Without you, our students wouldn't have had the experience of a lifetime.
Congratulations to our Unified Track and Field Team who qualified for League Championships! Five teams will compete NEXT WEEK at our very own Walter T. Rohrer Stadium.
Come on out and support our awesome Pirates!

Information in this section will be particularly helpful for those who have students in our schools.
All students, grades 9-12, will be required to complete summer reading assignments. Assessment of the required reading texts for all students in English courses will occur during the second week of the school year, regardless of the semester in which the student is enrolled in the associated course.
For the social studies courses, students will need to complete a written assignment and bring a print copy to school with them during the first week of school and share it with their classroom teacher. Grade 12 students, be advised that you will need to complete the summer reading social studies packet if you are enrolled in Cultural Diversity or the Government course (even if you are also in an AP course).
Please be reminded that these assignments must be completed before school starts on August 30, 2026.
We have created a site with more information on and access to each assignment, along with answers to Frequently Asked Questions and special needs. You can find complete information online at the high school library homepage HERE: http://tinyurl.com/ydxxe2fk
We’re excited to introduce a new video series designed to inform, support, and connect our community: "Journeys in Special Education with Lou deFonteny." This series offers a clear, approachable look at the foundations of special education and the services available to support every learner.
In the first episode, Mr. deFonteny, Director of Students for the Palisades School District, breaks down key concepts including FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education), the range of special education services, and the differences between special education and 504 services. His thoughtful guidance helps demystify these important topics, offering families a better understanding of how we work together to meet the unique needs of each student.
We invite you to tune in, learn more, and continue the journey with us as we highlight the programs and practices that support all learners across our district.
We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Brian Gilbert, Moriah Hoferica, Autumn Jacoby, and the PHS Studio for their time and production support!
You can find the first episode here: https://youtu.be/z5Y2TrMRsnI

Join us for a special family Civic Story Hour featuring U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil M. Gorsuch, honorary co-chair of the National Constitution Center. Justice Gorsuch and his co-author and former law clerk Janie Nitze return for a conversation and book signing celebrating their new children’s book, Heroes of 1776: The Story of the Declaration of Independence (HarperCollins; May 5, 2026). During the program, they will read selections from the book and join in conversation with Julie Silverbrook, chief content and learning officer at the National Constitution Center.
Designed for families and learners of all ages, this program invites audiences into the human stories behind the Declaration of Independence. Through storytelling and dialogue, the program will explore how individuals across the colonies grappled with the meaning of liberty, independence, and self-government. This Civic Story Hour offers a welcoming space for families to engage with these ideas together, ask questions, and reflect on how the founding principles continue to shape our lives today.
About the Book
Heroes of 1776 introduces readers to both familiar figures such as Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Paul Revere, as well as lesser-known participants in the American story, including Caesar Rodney, Thomas Paine, and Mary Katharine Goddard. Together, their stories highlight the risks, choices, and debates that shaped the nation’s founding. Blending vivid storytelling with historical detail, the book centers the lived experiences behind the founding era and invites young readers to consider the enduring ideals of the Declaration.
