Carla Soto (DEVRO)
Ever since I was a child, I was always curious about what things are made of, how they work, etc. This, eventually, translated to me obtaining a BSc in Chemistry, my thesis was on organic synthesis of pharmaceutical products. While doing my undergraduate degree I spent a year in Glasgow, UK and after that I always wanted to continue learning in and about other cultures. A few years later I won a grant from the EACEA for the Erasmus Mundus Master in Archaeological Materials Science, which gave me the opportunity to study in 4 universities in 3 different countries - Portugal, Greece, and Italy. My Master thesis focused on developing cleaning protocols for archaeological metals. Now I am part of the TEMPERA network.
My PhD project focuses on exploring the ability of proteomics to assess changes in proteins present in parchment and leather - mainly collagen - caused by modern and ancient manufacturing processes, and its relevance to modern day processing of collagen in the food industry. While very different to my previous studies, I am excited to apply my knowledge of organic and physical chemistry to yet another area of research.
