Here is a photograph of a milkweed plant in our garden with a swallowtail butterfly on it.
Description:
The showy milkweed has a star shaped flower with five points and it is red purple.
It grows by rivers, roadsides, and open forest areas.
There pods have a leathery outside and are around five inches and have some soft feather like strands and their oval seeds are one centimeter.
The stem is thirty nine to forty seven and a half inches tall.
The leaf is ovalish with smooth edges.
Interesting Facts:
They are native to Oregon but they grow in other places like California Washington and Canada.
It attracts butterflies and humming birds.
Milkweed got its name after its milky sap.
They flower may through august.
The show milkweed is poisonous.
Native Americans made baskets out of milkweed.
