Description:
The Big Leaf Lupine is a large tall plant. It has large green leaves that look like palm trees. It has thick clusters of dark bluish purple pea shaped flowers.
Geography:
It is native to western North America. It can be found from Canada to as far south as California.
Growing Conditions:
It grows well in rich, moist soil. It loves being in full sun. A great choice for wetland gardens or meadows.
Survival Traits:
All parts of the plant are toxic, especially the seeds! This keeps animals from eating it.
Wildlife:
The beautiful blue flowers attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. They love nectar. Mason bees and bumblebees love its pollen.
Lifecycle and Reproduction:
The seeds are slow to germinate. It can take 10 - 14 days. They bloom in late spring.
Interesting Facts:
They are often called blue bonnets. You can even eat the seeds if they are cooked properly.
