Description:
It can be six or seven feet. Its stem is green in the summer and in the fall it’s golden brown. The flower is brown and slender.
Geography:
It grows in North and South America and in Asia. It grows in water.
Growing Conditions:
It grows in full sun or light shade. It lives in shallow water and clay soil.
Wildlife:
Birds perch on it. Frogs, red winged blackbirds, beavers, and muskrats live around cattails.
Lifecycle and Reproduction:
It starts by root division or by seed. Over 1000 flowers can be made on one plant. The plant grows male flowers on top and female flowers below. Female flowers become seeds.
Interesting Facts:
It has no serious pest or disease issues. It is an aggressive plant that is hard to control. Nutria and beavers like the roots and ducks eat the seeds. Teal ducks and finches also eat the seed.
