Dr Andrew Murray is a Reader in Metabolic Physiology at the University of Cambridge and the WYNG Fellow in Natural Sciences at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Andrew grew up in South Wales and studied Biochemistry as an undergraduate at Christ Church, Oxford, before completing a DPhil in cardiac metabolism. Andrew moved to Cambridge as a Research Councils UK Academic Fellow in 2007, where his research group investigate mitochondrial physiology in health and disease. Andrew is a co-Principal Investigator for the Xtreme Everest Oxygen Research Consortium. In this capacity, Andrew and his team have carried out fieldwork during two major research expeditions to Everest: Caudwell Xtreme Everest (2007) and Xtreme Everest 2 (2013). In 2007 the team made the first measurements of cardiac and skeletal muscle energy metabolism in climbers returning from the summit of Everest, and in 2013 they investigated metabolic adaptations in the Sherpa people which allow them to live and work at high altitude and are associated with their unique genetics. Andrew is also the co-inventor of a novel, dietary ketone ester supplement, which has been shown to enhance exercise capacity and cognition and is currently sold in the US as HVMN Ketone.
