Middlesex Fells Hike
Sunday May 28, 2023 (Memorial Weekend)
Sunday May 28, 2023 (Memorial Weekend)
The society is organizing a short hike in the Middlesex Fells Reservation, our third annual Oxford and Cambridge Society hike. This will be different from our hike there two years ago. The Fells is an easily accessible state park, established in the 1890s, of more than 2200 acres spread over five towns north of Boston: Malden, Medford, Melrose, Stoneham, and Winchester. Our hike will be along the Rock Circuit Trail, in the section of the reservation east of Route 93. The name is accurate: The route is a circuit, and it is rocky. It features much up and down over bare rock, though only one or two spots may require the use of hands. The rocky ledges offer several vantage points with views south to Boston and east into Malden, and the trail also takes in the remains of MIT's geodetic observatory, constructed in 1899. The route is 4.2 miles, and may take two to three hours.
Our starting point is easily accessible from the Orange Line's northern terminus, Oak Grove, where there is also ample parking.
This hike is moderately demanding, and participants should be comfortable on a brisk walk and not be subject to any infirmities that constrain their ability to go uphill on bare rock and down. Sunday, May 28 (Memorial Day weekend), with a rain date of Sunday, June 11.
Participation is limited to ten members. When you sign up, you will be sent suggestions for dress, what to bring, and directions to our starting point. The hike will be led by Adam Apt.
