The Oxford and Cambridge Society of New England cordially invites you to the
Annual Christmas Dinner
Sunday December 8th, 2019
6:00-10:00pm
Winchester Country Club
The Guest of Honor at this Christmas Dinner is Sasha Tipper (Lucy Cavendish, Cambridge), a former President and long-time member of the Society, and Professor Emeritus of Nichols College. She attended Tiffin Girls' School in Kingston on Thames, Mount Holyoke College, Washington University, St. Louis, and finally the University of Wisconsin, Madison, from which she graduated with a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. An expert on the work of Oscar Wilde, she has written extensively on Lady Jane Wilde, the poet Baudelaire, and the latter's influence on Oscar Wilde's work.
Her current project is a critical biography of Sir William Wilde, the subject of her talk:
Sir William Wilde, 1815-1876, Surgeon Oculist in Ordinary to Queen Victoria in Ireland: Aural and Ophthalmic Surgeon, Founder of St. Mark's Hospital for Diseases of the Ear and Eye in Dublin, Antiquarian, Statistician, Travel Writer.
Sir William has been called one of the most remarkable savants of the nineteenth century and one of the greatest Irishmen of his time. While not as well known as his playwright son, he was a man of broader genius.
Attire for gentlemen will be black tie, college blazer or business suit.
The event is open to OxCamNE members and their guests. Tickets cost $100 per person ($85 for student members) including wine and port with dinner and a reception drink. Please reserve online (you can pay using PayPal, a credit/debit card, or by check), for more information contact secretary@oxcamne.org. Advance reservation is required and should be made by Tuesday December 3rd.
The Winchester Country Club has ample parking. Directions are here. Although the Winchester Country Club is in the suburbs, one of the reasons we selected it is that it is accessible from Boston and Cambridge by public transportation. There is infrequent bus service (bus 350) between Alewife Station and the club (Mystic Street/Old Mystic Street stop), or it is a short Lyft/Uber ride from Alewife.
The Annual Meeting of Members (AGM) and the Regular Meeting of Directors will take place at the dinner. Members in good standing will receive the official notice of the meeting in a separate email.
Sincerely,
Ashley Stevens
