Course Description: This course explores the effect of music in film, largely concentrating on how the various elements of music itself -harmony, melody, tempo, instrumentation, and timbre- are important to how the music can support a scene's dialogue, action, atmosphere, or emotional content. Analysis will focus mostly on the symphonic score ("original score", "original soundtrack") but will also cover other topics, particularly the use and effect of song in diegetic and non-diegetic contexts. The first part of the semester is geared toward learning basic musical terminology and recognizing all the instruments of the standard symphony orchestra. Ability to read music is NOT required. Though the course will use examples from a variety of film genres, the Fall 2020 class will draw as much as possible from the now-completed "Star Wars" saga. Writing Option available. Prerequisite: ENG 105. Fulfills Group IV distribution credit.
