Course Description: An introductory course emphasizing four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The Chinese pronunciation (Pin Yin system with its four tones), the Chinese writing system (traditional and simplified Chinese) and basic grammar are covered. Different aspects of Chinese culture and history are discussed. The aim is to prepare students to speak and comprehend with some facility and to read texts of moderate difficulty. Emphasis is on class preparation and active use of the language.

Course Description: This is a sequel course to Chinese 111. It continues to develop the necessary skills to basic communicative Chinese and expands upon the basics of Chinese active use of the language. The goal of the course is to further develop all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will develop these skills through further learning of basic grammatical structures and appropriate sociolinguistic understanding of the Chinese culture. Prerequisite: Chinese 111 or permission of the instructor. F.
