Our staff is the heart of our mission, maintaining high expectations while building meaningful relationships that drive student success. Since 2002, we have served the District 30 community and beyond as a tuition-free public charter school, located in the vibrant Kaufman Studios area of Astoria—a thriving educational hub surrounded by creativity, diversity, and opportunity.

Creative expression is a cornerstone of the OWN 1 ES experience.  With a strong emphasis on music, visual arts, and film—just to name a few—teachers are encouraged to weave what students are learning across disciplines, fostering deeper connections and creative thinking. We are also proudly one of the only International Baccalaureate (IB) charter elementary schools in New York City. Through the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), our educators engage students in inquiry-driven learning that cultivates curiosity, critical thinking, and global-mindedness. 

Teachers at OWN 1 ES are not only educators—they are mentors and leaders helping shape the next generation of thoughtful, compassionate citizens.  Collaboration with families is central to our work.
