Unified Sports
Special Olympics provides sports training and athletic competition in a variety of sports for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Owasso Rams Special Olympics team participates in a variety of sports with an emphasis on Unified Sports which promotes social inclusion through shared training and competitive experiences. Our Unified teams compete year round at both the area and state level. The goal of Unified sports is to build friendships and understanding while we train and compete in multiple sports.
Individual Sports
Special Olympics also offers the opportunity to compete in a variety of individual sports. Participation in these sports as a classroom group is based on interest at each school site. As a parent you may be required to provide practice opportunities outside of school, necessary equipment, or transportation to events. If your child would like to participate in an individual sport please contact your child’s teacher or Susan St.John at Susan.StJohn@owassops.org for more information. The following individual competitions are offered: Athletics (running and throwing events), Swimming, Golf, Equestrian, Powerlifting, Art, and Music and Dance.

The Owasso team offers students the option to participate in a variety of sports and compete at both the area and state level. Athletes must compete at an area level competition in order to advance to a state level competition.

Participation in Unified Sports at the elementary level is based on interest at each elementary campus.

OSSAA Unified Sports
Special Olympics Oklahoma has partnered with Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association to offer the opportunity for Unified teams from high schools around the state to play for a state championship. Much like other varsity sports, teams from the east and west sides of the state complete against each other with the top two teams from each side advancing to the state playoffs. The Unified Volleyball league is in it's fifth year and Owasso's team has advanced to the Championships the past three years.
Beginning in 2024, Special Olympics Oklahoma and OSSAA will now offer a State Championship in Unified Cheerleading and Unified 4 X 100 Relay.
Athletics (Track and Field) / Young Athletes
This is an individual sport and will not be attended as a team. Parents will be responsible for transporting and supervising their athlete throughout the day. Coaches will be on site to provide assistance with getting them to their individual events. If you would like for your child to participate in area athletics or Young Athletes activities you will need to notify your child’s teacher or Susan.StJohn@owassops.org so that they can be entered. Your child must compete at the area level in order to complete in track events in Stillwater.
State Fall Games in Stillwater
New in 2024 is Fall Games which is a state-level multi-sport competition that will be held each October on the campus of O.S.U. in Stillwater. Our Owasso team will compete in cheerleading, Unified Cheerleading and Unified Flag Football. This Unified Cheer competition will serve as a qualifying event for teams looking to advance to the State Championship in January. Fall Games is not an overnight trip and athletes will attend based on their sports.
State Winter Games in Norman
The State Winter Games is held in January. State-level competitions for several fall sports are offered at various venues in and around the campus of Oklahoma University in Norman. Winter Games is not an overnight trip and athletes will attend based on their qualifying fall sports.
State Summer Games in Stillwater
The State Summer Games are held ever year in May on the campus of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. In addition to participating in their events, the team will attend Opening Ceremonies, visit the Olympic Village, have lunch at Eskimo Joes and stay in the dorms. The highlight of our trip is always the Celebration Night dance! In order to be eligible for State games the athlete must participate in the Area competition for that event. However, your child is welcome to participate at the Area level even if your are unsure about participating in the state games.
