Frequently Asked Questions
Because kids matter to Jesus! Every Tuesday and Sunday, we have the opportunity to help children learn who God is, experience His love, build relationships with people who care about them, and begin developing a faith that can shape the rest of their lives.
Psalm 145:4 "One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts."
Anyone who has a heart for Jesus and children can be part of the OCC Kids Serve Team! Whether you are a longtime church member, new to OCC, a parent, grandparent, student, or simply looking for a place to serve, there is a role for you.
We have opportunities for people with a variety of gifts, personalities, and availability.
Yes! We love giving students opportunities to serve and grow in leadership. Students can begin serving in Kids Ministry once they enter 7th grade. Serving opportunities are designed to be age-appropriate and differ from adult volunteer roles. We’ll help students find a place where they can serve well and continue growing in their faith.
We are happy to sign off on volunteer hours for students!
Not at all! You don’t need previous experience working with children to serve with OCC Kids. We will provide the training and support you need to feel confident in your role. What matters most is that you have a heart for children, a desire to help them know and love Jesus, and a willingness to learn and serve.
There are lots of ways to serve beyond teaching a Sunday morning class! Depending on your gifts and interests, you might serve as a classroom teacher, assistant, check-in volunteer, greeter, special event volunteer, substitute, or in another support role.
We’ll help you find a place where your gifts and interests can be used to serve children and families well.
We need you, too! Not every volunteer is called to teach or be front-and-center with kids. Events, check-in, craft preparation, organization, hospitality, special projects, and other behind-the-scenes roles are all important to creating a great experience for children and families.
That’s completely normal! You don’t have to walk into your first class knowing exactly what to do. We’ll walk alongside you, provide training, and help you get comfortable in your role.
You won’t be serving alone. Our team is here to support you, answer questions, and help you feel confident as you serve.
There are multiple rhythms to serving! Serve Team Volunteers can serve weekly, every other week, as a substitute when needed, or primarily during special events. We want to find a serving rhythm that works well for you and allows you to serve with joy.
Consistency is especially important for our kids. When children regularly see the same faces, they feel safe, known, and connected. This is how meaningful relationships have the opportunity to grow. For this reason, we encourage lead teachers to serve weekly whenever possible.
Our biggest expectation is that you will show up, be present and care well for kids. We ask volunteers to be dependable, prepared, engaged, and committed to creating an environment where every child feels safe, welcomed, known, and loved. All serve team members are also expected to have an active, ever-growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
We’ll make sure you’re prepared and supported before you begin serving. Volunteers age 18 and older are required to complete our online Youth Protection Training along with a mandatory background check. Every volunteer will also meet with our Kids Ministry Director to review important policies, procedures, and expectations before joining the team.
All curriculum and supplies are prepared and provided for you.
In addition, we offer two Serve Team trainings each year designed to help you grow as a disciple, strengthen your skills, and be better equipped to care for the children entrusted to us. Attendance at these trainings is expected for all Kids Serve Team members.
Once you express interest in serving, we’ll connect with you to learn a little more about you, your interests, and where you might enjoy serving. From there, we’ll guide you through the necessary training and onboarding steps.
Before you begin serving, you’ll have the opportunity to observe, ask questions, meet the team, and become familiar with your serving environment.
Kids don’t need perfect teachers or professional entertainers. They need adults who will show up, listen, encourage them, pray for them, and point them toward Jesus.
You may be surprised by the difference you can make simply by being a consistent, caring presence in a child’s life.
There’s room for you on the OCC Kids Serve Team.
