To simplify this question let's divide it into two parts because it's such a big question that it may help to break it down. Half 1 Should they be allowed in class? Half 2 Should they be allowed on campus?
What are the consequences of cell phones being allowed in school? Parents say that one of the main reasons kids should have phones is because if there was ever an emergency then kids would be able to call their parents during an emergency. But if all the parents came rushing up all at once it could cause traffic. And if all the kids called their parents at the same time it may cause network traffic. Another reason kids should not have their phones in school is because they may sneak the answers to a hard problem/test, or they could be playing video games during their classes. Kids may also be taking pictures of some kid messing up and posting them on social media, (And as you know it is illegal to take a photo of someone without their permission.)
According to www.ges.harverd.edu, it says “But the day-in and day-out component of school safety is how students use phones within school. This might include things like bullying, harassment, videotaping, and posting to social media. Those are reasons why having phones within schools could potentially be accelerators of negative student behavior.” These are reasons that kids should not be allowed to have phones in school for reasons like posting videos of people on social media.
Should there be exceptions to having phones in class? “(“In years past, I was fully on board with the idea of banning technology use in my classes,” she said, making exceptions for students with disabilities who needed help. Over time, though, she became more flexible: “Every now and then, I could say, ‘Can we look something up?’"
The experience of Professor Huxtable-Jester, who is also the associate director at the university’s Center for Teaching and Learning, demonstrates evolving debates on whether smartphones, tablets, and laptops divert students’ attention from the lesson at hand. “People develop very strong opinions,” she said. “The dividing line is everyone wants to do what is right, but no one knows what that is.”)” Says the NY Times article, Screens in the Classroom: Tool or Temptation?”.
This is a great example of what to do about phones in class according to the article it says some kids need phones for many reasons of their own. But maybe having minimal phones in class is a good solution. As the article said some assignments may need phones or other devices.
We think that Cell Phones should be allowed in school, just not in class. Because it makes kids and parents feel more comfortable to be able to contact their kids and be able to tell if their kids are okay. So we think that kids shouldn't be able to do half one from above which was, "Half 1 Should they be allowed in class?" And our answer to that was No. So we agree with half 2 which was, "Half 2 Should they be allowed on campus?" Our answer was yes they should. And of course, like the article says maybe a few exceptions, and of course exceptions for kids who need their phones for some reason.
And if kids are doing illegal things on their phones that isn’t the school's fault they could even be doing illegal things on their phones at home. And it isn’t fair to those kids who may need their phone for purposes whether it is to make them feel better or maybe that kid needs extra help for them not to be able to bring their phone to school.
(If you have a different opinion, well no need to get mad. It's called an opinion piece because it may not be your opinion but someone else's, even though you may or may not agree with them.)
