Investigation Purpose

Students have firsthand experiences with two closely related animal--pill bugs and sow bugs, two examples of the phenomena called isopods. Through observation and discussion, students gather information about isopod structures and behaviors and how those characteristics relate to the needs of the animals.

Content

  • Isopods are animals and have basic needs--water, air, food, and space with shelter.

  • Different kinds of isopods have some structures and behaviors that are the same and some that are different.

Practices

  • Compare the structures and behaviors of two kinds of isopods, commonly known as pill bugs and sow bugs.

  • Describe and communicate observations of several kinds of animals living together in a terrarium habitat.
