Investigation Purpose
Students explore the phenomena of earth materials that are important to trees--rocks, soil, and water. They describe the properties of nonliving materials, and observe how the materials interact and change. They have firsthand experience with reuse and recycling of resources.
Content
Rocks, soil, and water are earth materials.
Rocks can be compared, sorted, and described by their properties.
Soil can be describe by its properties.
Water can change from solid to liquid (melt) with heat and from liquid to solid (freeze) with cold.
Land, air, water, and trees are natural resources.
People reuse and recycle to conserve natural resources.
Practices
Observe and describe earth materials using the senses.
Mix earth materials with water to observe properties.
