Investigating the ethics of factory farming and its relation to consumer culture

Personal Credo

I am a visual artist specializing in drawing and watercolor. I draw my inspiration from the complexities of our environment and the impact that humans have on it. With every brush stroke, my goal is to capture the beauty of nature - and the cruelty that humans inflict upon it. My art seeks not to mollify viewers to the truth of our world, but instead evoke emotions of restlessness and need for change.

Biography

Chanel Mao is currently a senior attending Skyline High School in Oakland, CA. Born and raised in the Bay Area, she grew up with values pertaining to social justice and environmental advocacy. As co-president of Skyline’s Asian Student Union, Chanel is passionate about promoting cultural awareness and supporting the progression of other cultural groups. Though many aspects of Asian cuisine conflict with environmental sustainability, she was able to persist with her moral principles - becoming the only vegetarian in her entire family. As her environmental consciousness gained momentum, she was encouraged to dedicate her art and senior project to the ethics factory farming. In the future, Chanel plans to continue her studies in environmental science, as well as biopsychology or linguistics.
