2nd grade with Miss Peña

Welcome to Second Grade!

Hi! My name is Miss Peña and this will be my third year teaching second grade at Laurel Elementary. I have had the opportunity of working with students preK-5th grade. I believe that, as a teacher, it is my responsibility to create an equitable learning environment where my students feel safe to learn, to take risks, embrace their mistakes, and see them as a form of growth. I believe we must create innovative thinkers who feel empowered to collaborate with their community, reflect on their ideas, and persevere to achieve their goals.

Prior to moving back home to sunny San Diego, I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for 6 years. While working on my B.A. in Liberal Studies, I worked for an innovation summer camp as their 3rd-5th grade Lead Art Instructor and Pre K-2nd grade Lead Science Instructor. During this time, I worked with students using the same design process that I will be implementing through our Project Lead The Way (PLTW) program this year.

Project Lead The Way is a new program that Laurel will be implementing this year. PLTW provides an engaging, hands on experience that leads students towards a design-thinking mindset. It empowers students to be collaborative, courageous, determined, and reflective innovators.
