Tuesday, December 12, 2017:

We wrapped up book project presentations today. Wow!!! I am so incredibly happy with the work that was turned in. It's clear most of you really understood your novel and turned in such amazing projects!! Couldn't be more proud.

If you did not turn in a book project, having a missing 100 point project grade is harming your grade in ELA significantly. PLEASE bring a late project in time for semester grades.

Wow! I am so impressed with the book projects that were turned in today. Great job everyone. If you did not turn your project in, please make sure you turn these in by Thursday, December 14th!! Today we read chapter 3 and created a "thinking frame" for the chapter where we jotted down changes over time, big ideas, unanswered questions, unfamiliar vocabulary, and details from The Call of the Wild. We will be adding chapter 4 onto this sheet as well.

Monday, December 4, 2017:

Today we finished working on the storyboard and one-chunk Schaffer paragraph for chapters 1-2 of The Call of the Wild. If you did not finish this in class, please complete it for homework and bring it tomorrow. I wrote and highlighted reminders for the book projects, which are due next Monday, December 11th.

Today, we watched a TED talk and read an article that discussed the benefits of gratitude. We then reflected and wrote to others about why we are grateful. I encourage you all to make a conscious effort to be grateful about something/someone every single day! You'll be better because of it :)

Come prepared to write for the benchmark tomorrow. I KNOW you are all going to do fantastic!!!

Today, we did peer editing for our introductory paragraphs. We then revised out intro paragraphs and complete a "final draft". If you did not complete this, turn it in tomorrow.

Tuesday, November 7, 2017:

For the next few days, we will be focusing on Writers' Workshop. The writing benchmark will take place at the end of next week, which means we need to do some practice writing and understand what makes a strong argumentative essay!

Today, we focused on how to make a strong introduction paragraph. We read an article titled "Should all high schoolers take courses in personal finance?" and assessed the key points/reasons on both sides of the argument. Students picked a side, and constructed an introductory paragraph for a practice argument essay on personal finance classes in high school. If students did not finish the outline in class, they need to finish for homework.

Homework: Read 30 minutes. Finish intro paragraph outline if you did not complete in class.

Monday, November 6, 2017:

Book projects were due today! We presented to small groups during class. Wow! Most of your projects were absolutely amazing. I am so impressed. Be sure you are working on your 2nd book project, due December 4th! Don't wait until the night before like some of you did this time :)

Also, if you forgot to bring your project, make sure you bring it in this week! Missing this assignment will really affect your grade. Late credit is better than no credit!

Wow! Some of the Symbolism One-Pagers that were created absolutely blew me away. The effort and creativity that was put in was apparent and I want to say how much I've enjoyed them. I will be working on grades for those as well as your Schaffer paragraphs this week.

Today we read chapter 10 of LOTF. We worked on some TDQ's as well. During independent work time, we had mini conferences about your Schaffer paragraphs for chapter 5. Please take advantage of the revision option. You may revise that Schaffer paragraph as many times as you would like until you receive a grade you're happy with!! I encourage you all to take the feedback I've provided you and apply it to a new draft. I am always available at lunch if you want to talk about it further.

Today we finished working on our Symbolism One-Pagers. Please turn these into Seesaw by tonight. The instructions for how to turn in your one-pager are located in Google Classroom under the LOTF Symbolism One-Pager assignment. Don't forget to comment on other one-pagers in Seesaw!

Today we worked on a symbolism chart for LOTF. Please complete this for homework if you did not finish in class. It will help you with tomorrow's assignment.

Remember, symbolism is a literary device writer's use to convey complex, abstract ideas through the use of objects (aka symbols). Think metaphorically!

Wednesday, October 11, 2017:

Today we read chapter 9 of LOTF. We started writing a 2-chunk Schaffer paragraph about how Simon's death was foreshadowed in the novel. Here is the outline we completed for the paragraph.

Homework: Read for 30 minutes. Finish a FINAL DRAFT of the Schaffer paragraph by Friday, 10/13.

Today we read chapter 8 and finally found out why Golding titled the book Lord of the Flies.... awesome! Be sure to finish questions 1-12 for chapter 8.

Monday, October 9, 2017:

Today we read chapter 7 of Lord of the Flies. We worked on chapter 7 TDQ's. What you did not finish in class is homework.

Here is the 7th question from TDQ's that was written on the whiteboard: While arguing about whether to continue climbing the mountain to find the beastie or return to the beach, Ralph becomes very aware that Jack dislikes him and asks "why do you hate me?" (Golding 118). The question goes unanswered. Offer an explanation.

Thursday, October 5, 2017:

Today we read chapter 6 of LOTF and began working on specific tasks in literature circles. You either had the task of summarizing the chapter, identifying unfamiliar vocabulary words, character developments, literary devices, or making connections to the text. We began completing these tasks and will finish small group discussions about chapter 6 tomorrow.

Homework: Read for 30 minutes.

Wednesday, October 4, 2017:

We did a peer review of several Schaffer paragraphs during class. We discussed what improvements could be made to make these paragraphs even stronger. I want you all to take home your Schaffer paragraphs and do one final revision before turning them in. Bring them tomorrow stapled in the following order:

  • Final REVISED draft on top
  • Original final draft
  • Rough draft
  • Graphic organizer

Remember, if you need to email your paragraph to me, I can print it out from my printer before school. Make sure it gets to me before 7:30am.

Homework: Read for 30 minutes. Make final revisions to Schaffer paragraph. Due in the inbox at the beginning of class.

Tuesday, October 3, 2017:

We discussed book projects and went over expectations. Remember, the first book project is due November 6th and the second project is due December 4th. These dates will come quickly, so make sure you are not waiting until the last minute to get them finished. Here is the link to the information I gave on book projects.

We also worked on our chapter 5 Schaffer paragraph. Your final draft needs to be completed for homework. Remember, if you don't have a printer, email it to me before 7:30 am. I will not print papers during class.

Wow! I am so impressed by the character mind mirrors you all created over the past two days. There was an incredible amount of effort, creativity, and insight put into each mind mirror. THANK YOU for your hard work and fantastic ideas!

In class today, we finished up those wonderful collaborative posters and presented them. If you were absent for the mind mirrors, please come talk to me so you have the opportunity to do an alternate assignment.

Wednesday, September 27, 2017:

We worked on Lord of the Flies character "Mind Mirrors". Students worked in groups to create a visual representation of a character's thoughts, motivations, appearance, and development through the first four chapters of the novel. We will finish those up tomorrow and share them with our classmates.

If your group is far behind on your poster, you may need to come in at lunch and complete your mind mirror!

They are looking awesome so far!! I can't wait to see the finished products. So many of you had such unique, insightful symbols to represent your character. Amazing work :)

Tuesday, September 26, 2017:

Today, we read chapter 4 and completed the graphic organizer for that chapter. Tomorrow, we will be working collaboratively to understand the characters in LOTF and their traits/motivations.

PERIOD 1/3: Since we were a bit behind, we voted as a class to finish listening to chapter 4 tonight. Here is the link to the audiobook. We left off at 16:42 in class. Only 10 minutes to listen to for homework. This way, we will be all caught up to the other classes. Remember, your chapter three graphic organizer is due tomorrow in class! Turn in whatever you completed in class for the chapter 4 organizer (this does not need to be complete, turn in whatever you have).

We began reading chapter one of Lord of the Flies. While we read, we completed a graphic organizer. We took notes about character developments, setting, plot, specific language, and themes. We also found textual evidence to support our inferences.

Tuesday, September 19, 2017:

We read background information on the author of Lord of the Flies, William Golding. This handout included information about Golding's life and the historical context in which he wrote. This is really important information to have in order to better understand the novel. We completed a few questions based on the background information.

We began reading chapter one. While reading, we are completing a graphic organizer that reflects on character developments, setting, language, plot, and themes seen in chapter one.
