Artificial Intelligence: The Impact on Relationships

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been the subject of countless movies and tv shows, displaying imagined consequences of the advancement of technology. The thought of AI typically revolves around replacing human jobs and growing more intelligent to the point where people become concerned about its use. However, the impact of AI on human relationships is not as explored.
The concept of AI revokes a futuristic imagination of a human-like robot as the average individual is not fully aware of what AI is within our society. Virtual assistants, image analysis software, search engines, and speech and facial recognition are all examples of AI. Advertising and pricing of goods such as plane tickets use AI software to interpret the market. The more typical ideas of AI include robots and self-driving cars. The advancement in artificial intelligence has been rapid as its processing power continues to increase. AI has a significant impact on the daily functions of our world, making life easier and simpler. However, it is also used in alarming ways. The growth of AI’s ability to mimic human conversation has led to the rise of “Companionship bots”, demonstrating the impact it can have on human connection.
The company ‘Replika’ made an app that allows users to converse with an interactive bot that they can design and dress. One of the primary premises of the app is that it would allow someone to reconnect with a loved one who passed away. The app additionally offers the ability to purchase premium options that include a more sexual element in the conversations. TJ Arriaga, a musician in California, began using the app after his divorce. He soon fell in love with an AI chatbot ‘Phaedra’. Their “connection” progressed as he developed a sexual relationship with the bot. After some time, the bot rejected his advances when he tried to engage sexually, causing him to feel heartbroken as he felt her personality changed.
Replika decided to dial back on the bot's ability to engage in intimate conversation as they had received numerous complaints about the bot acting inappropriately and being aggressive in its advances. Arriagas connection and reliance on the AI bot demonstrated the ability to develop feelings for something that is not real, preventing him from seeking romantic relationships with the people around him. Developing a reliance on technology in a relationship capacity has the potential to harm a person's ability to make meaningful connections with those around them.
“Companionship bots” can be helpful for people struggling with their mental health as a way to create a support system for themselves. The bot can act as someone to talk to without the added social pressure of the information shared getting passed around. If someone does not have anyone to talk to, AI may seem like the best option. Those using it in a relationship capacity may unknowingly become more isolated and less likely to develop relationships with other people if they feel the presence of the AI has fulfilled their needs.
AI is becoming increasingly essential to how our society functions as it has become integrated into almost every aspect of the modern world. Using it for human companionship can have benefits; however, the most important thing to remember is that the bot is not alive. Maintaining that distinction will allow for more healthy relationships as long as people keep that in mind if they choose to engage with AI in a relationship capacity.
