The OHS Fine Arts Week is back for the first time since 2019. The week-long celebration will take place April 10th through April 14.
“It’s all things performing,” OHS Choir Teacher Mrs. Yancey said.
The week will include an art show, auction, student performances, solos, drama club performances, visual performances, and a faculty recital.
“Teachers will receive a schedule and they have an option to have their class attend,” Mrs. Yancey said.
It’s a week for students to showcase their talent to their classmates and express themselves as a performer.
“The students are the rock stars of the week. Some are performing solos in front of a couple hundred kids, so the fact that they are willing to take that risk to show their abilities is scary but exhilarating,” Mrs Yancey stated.
With that, the Fine Arts Week also highlights teaching students to be respectful audience members.
“It’s about teaching students to listen and respect the performers,” Mrs. Yancey said. That’s one of the things that isn’t really thought about during the week, but is a big part.
“We get to celebrate what we do and share music and teach [them] what being a good audience member looks like,” Mrs. Yancey explained.
With the Fine Arts Week, the tedious planning comes along with it.
“The first step is planning which week it is going to be, which is typically a week or two after spring break,” Mrs. Yancey said.
It isn’t a very stressful event to plan. The music department picks a headliner to book things out as far in advance as possible.
“It’s a matter of plugging in who is going to do what, which group is performing when, and what class periods they’re performing,” Mrs. Yancey said.
There will be a great deal of teaching and performances. A Leap Above Dance is performing and that will be a huge event.
Drama Club is performing their Humpty Dumpty one act play and improv group will be performing as well.
The OHS Music Department is so excited to finally be back and express their talents to the school for the first time since pre-Covid.
