Spanish I (Grade 9-12) 1 Credit

Spanish I emphasizes a basic, balanced approach to building listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills. Fundamental language structure and vocabulary are learned with practical, conversational context. Culture and daily life customs of the Spanish-speaking world are studied.

Spanish II (Grade 9-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Spanish I
Spanish II continues developing the four language skills and the curriculum begun in the first level. Reading selections are more challenging than in the previous level and grammar subject matter becomes progressively more complex. Vocabulary building continues. Students continue to build conversational and composition skills on a more advanced level integrating the skills learned in Level I with the new material. Students will also continue learning about the culture of the Spanish-speaking world and will compare and contrast customs of Spanish speakers of these countries to those of our country.

Spanish III (Grade 9-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Spanish II
The objectives of Spanish III include further development of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills. Extensive vocabulary building is stressed and fundamental grammar structures are mastered to a high level of proficiency while more advanced grammar concepts are introduced. There is an increased emphasis on both reading and writing. Diverse aspects of the Spanish culture are treated as well as self-expression in practical situations.

Spanish IV Honors (Grade 10-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Spanish III
This course is designed for students who have good control of basic language skills and who are ready to expand their proficiency in all four language skill areas. The curriculum is more extensive than previous levels and the work is more intensive. Students develop a higher level of analytical thought in the language as they apply cultural research and creativity to oral and written presentations.

AP Spanish (11-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Spanish IV Honors
This is a college level course in the Spanish language and students are assessed accordingly. Major emphasis is on vocabulary building, reading comprehension, expository writing, near-native communication skills, and critical thought in the language. Advanced grammar, contemporary Hispanic literature, current events and cultural concepts are all treated through readings, discussions and a variety of activities.
