Latin I (Grade 9-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None
Latin I is offered to provide the student with a better understanding of English vocabulary and grammar and an appreciation of the cultural heritage derived from the Romans. Latin includes a mastery of basic Latin vocabulary; Latin grammar, including declensions and conjugations; and basic Latin syntax and usage. Stories read provide a coherent introduction and offer a rich insight into various aspects of Roman culture and literature and its influence on Western Civilization. In addition, great emphasis is placed on the word study skills, which focus on the influence of Latin on English vocabulary, syntax and grammar.

Latin II (Grade 9-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Latin I
Latin II is a continuation of language skills taught in Latin I. In addition to the systematic review of basic Latin grammar and syntax, the students will learn the irregular and passive system of verbs, all pronoun uses, all noun declensions and tenses and various other grammatical constructs. Students will have learned most grammatical structures and test this knowledge through numerous Latin readings and translations on Roman customs and institutions. Students will also expand their knowledge of Roman culture and history and the relationship of these aspects to modern life.

Latin III (Grade 10-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Latin II
In addition to the systematic review of basic Latin grammar and syntax, the objectives of this course focus on the mastery of more complex Latin grammar and syntax as well as on the development of translation and composition skills. Selected passages of Latin prose from various authors will be read in the original, translated into good English prose, and critically analyzed from both the historical and literary perspective. The skill of sight translation will be developed and encouraged and accuracy as well as literary quality of the original will be stressed.

Pre-AP Latin (Grade 10-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Latin II
The objectives of this course focus on the mastery of the more complex Latin syntax. Students will review previous grammar and syntax and will complete learning of grammatical structures. The objectives of this course focus on the mastery of more complex Latin syntax and grammar with emphasis on grammatical forms in selections of Caesar's De Bello Gallico. Selected passages of Caesar will be read in the original. Critical appreciation and analysis of characteristics and noteworthy features of the author's mode of expression will be strongly cultivated. Selections will be made from Caesar's De Bello Gallico in alignment with the AP syllabus.

Latin IV Honors (Grade 11-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Latin III or Pre-AP Latin
The objectives of this course focus on the mastery of the more complex Latin Syntax. Students will review previous grammar and syntax and will complete learning of grammatical structures. Selected passages of authors will be read in the original. Critical appreciation and analysis of characteristics and noteworthy features of the poets’ mode of expression will be strongly cultivated. Poetry selections will be made from the following: Caesar’s DeBello; selected letters of Pliny the Younger; selected poems of Catullus; selected odes of Horace; and Vergil’s AENEID (Book I, II, and excerpts from Book IV).

AP Latin (Grade 11-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Pre-AP Latin or Latin IV Honors
This course focuses on the refinement of all skills. This is a college level course in the Latin language and students are assessed accordingly. Major emphasis is on the specific readings of Caesar and Vergil outlined by the AP syllabus, vocabulary building, sight translation, comprehension, and critical thought in the language. Advanced grammar, historical events and cultural concepts are all treated through readings, discussions and a variety of activities.
