Chinese I (Grade 9-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None
Chinese I emphasizes listening and speaking skills of Mandarin Chinese. Pinyin, the official system of Romanization of the People’s Republic of China, is used to present vocabulary and grammar. Characters are introduced after vocabulary and/or grammar concepts have been introduced and practiced. Students must practice writing characters correctly, but the emphasis is on recognition and reading comprehension. Culture is studied with a focus on 20th century and modern day China.

Chinese II (Grade 9-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Chinese I
Chinese II is a continuation of Chinese I. Students will continue to build listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Although they will know more characters, grammar and vocabulary will still be introduced in pinyin. Vocabulary and grammar will be more complex. Culture will focus on history and customs of pre-20th century China.

Chinese III (Grade 9-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Chinese II
Chinese III is a continuation of Chinese II. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are further developed and strengthened. Vocabulary acquisition increases and more complex grammar concepts are introduced. Students are also required to become more proficient in writing and reading characters rather than pinyin. Culture of modern China is studied as well as traditional especially as it relates to today’s culture.

Chinese IV Honors (Grade 10-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Chinese III
Chinese IV continues building vocabulary, grammar, and sentence patterns of Mandarin Chinese. Speaking and listening skills will further be developed. In addition, there will be an emphasis on reading and writing characters. Culture will focus on modern China and the effect that traditional China has had and continues to have on today’s world.

AP Chinese (Grade 11-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Chinese IV Honors
The AP Chinese Language and Culture course in Mandarin Chinese emphasizes by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness. The course strives not to overemphasize grammatical accuracy at the expense of communication. To best facilitate the study of language and culture, the course is taught almost exclusively in Chinese. The AP Chinese Language and Culture course engages students in an exploration of culture in both contemporary and historical contexts. The course develops students’ awareness and appreciation of cultural products, (e.g., tools, books, music, laws, conventions, institutions); practices (patterns of social interactions within a culture); and perspectives (values, attitudes, and assumptions).
