AP English Literature and Composition (Grade 12) 1/2 Credit per Semester
Prerequisite: English III Honors
English IV Advanced Placement is a college-level course based on the curricular guidelines established by the College Board and described in the AP English Course Description. The writing-intensive course assumes that students already have a firm grasp of literary analysis and writing conventions, and the curriculum stresses in-depth critical study and close reading framed around a mix of classic and modern texts. Readings throughout the year may include plays by William Shakespeare and Edward Albee; novels by Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurston, Albert Camus, and Ken Kesey; poetry by Shakespeare, John Donne, Robert Browning, T.S. Eliot, Sylvia Plath, and Mary Oliver; and essays by Jonathan Swift, George Orwell, Annie Dillard and Joan Didion. Portions of the course work will involve preparation for the Advanced Placement exam for English Literature and Composition. Summer reading of 3 or 4 novels required.
