Ceramics examines the various means of forming and finishing clay objects that may be either utilitarian or decorative. Units of study include hand-building methods such as coil and slab constructions, tile, press molds, and ceramic sculpture, and the study of the techniques of using the potter’s wheel. Continued emphasis will be placed on the many different techniques of surface decoration and glazing.
Three-dimensional art forms are the basis of study for sculpture. Units include a review of design principles as they apply to full round and relief sculpture, and the creation of art forms in various materials. Students will utilize both the additive, or building process, and the subtractive, or carving process, in their work. Media include wood, clay, paper, wax, wire, stone, plaster, and papier-mâché.
Prerequisite: Ceramics and Sculpture
Intermediate Ceramics and Sculpture is a studio course for second year ceramics and sculpture students that introduce new and advanced skills for the more experienced student. Fundamental skills developed in the beginning ceramics course are utilized to explore the infinite possibilities of ceramic and sculpture production. The processes and techniques involved in making clay vessels on the potter’s wheel are introduced. This intermediate course also concentrates on the designing, producing and finishing of three-dimensional art forms from various materials, such as paper, plaster and wire.
Advanced Ceramics and Sculpture (Grade 12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Intermediate Ceramics and Scultpure
Advanced Ceramics and Sculpture is a studio course for third year ceramic and sculpture students that introduce new and advanced skills. Students will have the opportunity to use the knowledge and skills previously acquired in the beginning and intermediate classes to form a distinctive way of expressing themselves. They will continue to develop their own unique style and personal interpretation in various media while exploring more difficult processes and techniques.
Crafts Design (Grades 9-12) 1/2 Credit per Semester
Prerequisite: None
Crafts Design encompasses the study of various art forms. This course may be taken for a full year or semester. The emphasis of the course is placed on designing art objects that are both functional and aesthetic in a variety of media. Areas of study will include basic design, calligraphy, batik, weaving, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, metals, and silkscreen printmaking. In addition to studio work, the study of traditional and contemporary art and crafts in various cultures is an essential part of the creative process. After completion of Crafts Design, one year of advanced study in Crafts Design is available by permission of the instructor.
