Art I is the first course in the sequence of art offerings at Orange High School. Art I provides a strong background in many different media, and is the prerequisite for the advanced art courses. Art I is an introductory studio course emphasizing both the development of skills and appreciation for art. A wide variety of art experiences are explored, including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, crafts, printmaking, lettering, and graphics. Art I may be taken for one semester or the full year.
Art II (Grades 10-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Art I
Drawing is recommended as the first advanced or specialized class for students with a serious interest in art. The course develops drawing skills through various approaches, techniques, and styles. Media studied include pencil, colored pencil, ink, wash, scratchboard, charcoal and pastel. The study of realistic, symbolic and thematic drawing allows for the development of the use of imagination and individual expression.
Art III: Advanced Drawing and Painting (Grades 11-12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Art II Drawing
Advanced Drawing and Painting is offered as part of the sequence of courses recommended for art-oriented students. The continued reinforcement of drawing skills and compositional techniques is emphasized in this course. Painting examines many different methods and techniques in watercolor, tempera, and acrylic painting. Students will gain the ability to work in a wide range of approaches from abstract to realistic. Contemporary as well as the traditional styles of painting will be studied. Students are encouraged to pursue their own interests and ideas at this level of study.
Art VI (Grade 12) 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Advanced Drawing
Art IV is an advanced level course specializing in drawing, design, and painting. Art IV is recommended for seniors with specific interests or career goals in art. A variety of drawing, painting, and modeling techniques in various studio areas and an understanding of the relationship of the history of art to studio endeavors will be the primary focus of the course. Advanced skills and freedom of self-expression imply study and control of media and style, as well as individual choices within a range of subjects. The exhibition and professional presentation of artwork is an important part of the course. Students interested in art careers will develop a portfolio of artwork to present to prospective college art departments as a part of the curriculum.
