HOH message
We are delighted that school will resume for the full day from May 24th and that we are going with the 2-lunches model! This should mean that not only are we back to having lunch at school but there will also be time for extracurricular activities in the other lunchtime! This is such a valuable aspect of school life and with the extracurricular programme being revamped to allow more activities to take place, I strongly encourage everyone to participate in a couple of activities every week till the end of this term. I also hope to see more of our senior students offering and leading these activities.
We will also be looking at fitting in a Rutherford funding raising event for our charity, the Save The Children Fund now that we won’t have to rush off home at lunchtime! We will be looking to our senior students (after their exams) to lead a week of publicity and campaigning for the charity, along with events to fundraise. Of course, we will need to look carefully at what we can do in light of the safe social distancing rules which will still apply. Anyway, exciting times are ahead and we look forward to enthusiastic support from everyone!
Finally, we would like to wish all our students who are going through exams the best of luck. This can be a stressful period but it will soon be over. Meanwhile, look after yourselves, allow time for proper rest and most importantly, sleep!
Best Wishes!

THIS WEEK'S THEME - Interest Articles
Clement Kwan and Hannah Lee 10R
For the past few weeks, our articles have been focused on the Rutherford house as a whole. However, this time we've decided instead to go ask and chat with some of our fellow classmates across the Rutherford year group to see what their hobbies or interests they may have. Check out these articles and learn more about what our Rutherfordians enjoy to do!
A review of OSU
By an Anonymous Writer in Rutherford House
Ever wanted to listen to your favourite songs and test your rhythmic skills at the same time? This article talks all about it! Specifically around this music video game OSU. Explore this game's difficulties, levels and different unique gamemodes to understand what exactly makes this game so interesting to play.
Osu is a game that requires you to click on circles while listening to the rhythm of a specific song. At first, it may seem very easy. I mean, you’re just clicking circles that appear on the screen after all. However, let me tell you that osu is a much more complicated game than simply clicking circles, and it is much harder than it looks. The speed, the timing, the accuracy of clicking the circles are all challenging, and that's what makes it fun. There are different levels from a 1 star to a 10 star, and the higher the star of the song, the harder it is to complete the song.
Osu isn’t just about clicking circles, and in fact, clicking circles is only one of the four other game modes. The other three are: Osu Taiko, Osu Catch, and Osu Mania. These three game modes all require you to listen to a song as well, but the difference is the way you play the song. For instance, Osu Taiko is sort of a drum game, Osu Catch is a unique one where you sort of catch fruits falling from the screen, and Osu Mania is more like a piano tiles game. Even though the other three game modes are not as popular as clicking circles (probably because it's much harder). They can all be really fun depending on which game mode you like to play.
One of the reasons why I think osu is such a fun game is because you can listen to your favourite songs while you play! You can download your favourite song and listen to it while you play osu! For instance, this osu map called unravel, is a popular 8-star beatmap and listening to the song relaxes my mind. Not to mention, you’re playing the game and listening to the beat as well! Another thing I really like about osu is the multiplayer system. You can play osu with your friends, as a 1vs1, 2vs1, or even a 15vs1(if you're really good)!
Figure Skating
by Noriyasu Watanabe 10R
What is figure skating and what is it all about? In this week's article, we've got that answer. Written by Nori in 10R we've asked why he enjoys figure skating so much and what are the skills and techniques you can get out from it.
Figure skating is a sport that is often characterized as a sport that is awkward and sometimes even dangerous to do, but in my eyes without figure skating, I wouldn't be myself. Figure skating is skating on ice and performing all sorts of jumps and spins (Sometimes even doing cool transitions when switching between jumps and spins). The equipment I use for Figure skating includes sharp-bladed boots with sharp blades on the bottom of the shoe. Those blades have a thin bottom, so it's easy to lose balance. Tying the boots as tightly as possible is essential as you make trip over your laces or you might twist your ankle if you don't preform it correctly.
Whenever I go and skate I aim to achieve challenging jumps and hard spins to show my capability of the sport.
All of these reasons are what motivates me to improve and strive even in areas of education, as ice skating is a sport that can easily be improved and is a sport that shows a person's elegance and skills on the ice! To me, the best part is sliding with elegance it always brings such a delightful experience. These skills are continuously improved every week as I aim to control my skills over the blade as well as my flexibility.
Skating comes with various different levels and is determined by The ISI (Ice Skating Institute) which has a system that monitors and evaluates your skill level. For example, you won't be able to start performing the ISI freestyle levels if you haven't begun the simpler levels first like Beta, Gamma or Delta. Each level will teach you a range of techniques and skills that would get increasingly difficult overtime. These levels will allow you to do different rapid-moving spins (Like the1-foot spin) and tall jumps (Like the waltz jump).
Skating requires a lot of determination and in my opinion is actually a lot tougher compared to other sport, as it needs many things to be done correctly. I.e., boot tightening and training for consistent amount get hold of the balance and movement. Because of this, I find skating a sport that not a lot of people have the opportunity to try. So hopefully after reading this, I hope you understand the sparks and secrets of figure skating, and I highly recommend to anyone that reads this to have a go and give skating a try in general!
What is Rocket League?
By Prem Patel 10R
Ever wondered how a confrontation between rocket fulled cars in a match of football would commence? Then check out this article talking about exactly that! Written from Prem in 10R it talks about Rocket League where he talks about the mechanics of the game and explains why he enjoys playing it so much.
Rocket League is a vehicular football video game created by Psyonix. The game was first released for PC and PlayStation 4 in July 2015, with ports for Xbox One and Nintendo Switch being released later on. Rocket League can have up to eight players assigned to each of the two teams, using rocket-powered vehicles to hit a ball with the aim to score the ball into opponent's goal, just like football, and score points over the course of a match.
The game includes single-player and multiplayer modes that can be played both locally and online, including cross-platform play between all versions. Later updates for the game enabled the ability to modify core rules and added new game modes, including ones based on ice hockey and basketball. Matches are usually five minutes long, with a sudden death overtime if the game is tied at that point.
Matches can be played from between one-on-one up to four-on-four players, as well as in casual and ranked playlists. The latter serves as Rocket League's competitive online mode, where players compete in various tiered ranks within game seasons, with victories or losses raising or lowering a player's rank, respectively. The game includes a single-player "season" mode, with the player competing with computer-controlled players. An update in December 2016 introduced "Custom Training" sequences that can be created by players and shared with others on the same platform; players are able to specify the ball's path and the presence and skill of opponents on the field as to practice specific shots-on-goal over and over.
The reason I keep playing Rocket League is because of the rush you feel when you score an amazing goal of the pride you feel when you stop the other team from scoring, but most importantly I enjoy playing is because the team element and the way you and your friends can work together to try and win especially in the competitive modes.
