My Philosophy

Art is an important part of the education of the growing individual. It allows every student the potential to increase positive attitudes towards self, peers and the environment through creative experiences. These experiences are an important facet of one’s personality as it helps stimulate the imagination, develop self-esteem and encourage openness towards the opinions of others (Michael, 1983). Through art education, children and adolescents foster global intelligence using sensory, emotional, cognitive and kinesthetic involvement (Amorino, 2009). This leads students to defend their individualism, where personal experiences allow them to create art that is expressive and truly their own. Through dialoguing (Zander, 2004), students’ thoughts and ideas will lead to originality and a tendency for discovering creative intelligence with attributes that will last a lifetime.

My teaching approach will emphasize that there is no exact way to create art. My goal is to help students understand that art is an extension of one’s self, not mimicry of existing art. Existing art should give us a greater understanding of the world and its many cultures as well as inspire us to be creative. An important part of the creative process will be dialoguing with the students, encouraging and stimulating the development of their creative intelligence. At times students may find obstacles they may need to overcome and as an art educator I will guide them with problem solving, expressing opinions or defending judgments. Through the exploration and experimentation using a variety of media and techniques, I will also encourage students to find solutions and unique ways to be expressive. Dialogue will also be used as a means to encourage students to discuss and analyze their artwork, artwork of their peers and art of historical and present day artists. Students will have a greater understanding and acceptance of our world and of different cultures as they examine a mixture of visual culture and art history that relates to lesson themes, materials and/or techniques. My lesson plans will include age appropriate themes to motivate students into a creative and enjoyable art experience. States standards and The Principals of Design and Elements of Art are always considered as well as a variety of material usage and art history.

As an art educator, I want to inspire my students, helping them grow as individuals, strengthening their self-esteem and building their self-confidence. At the same time, their excitement, enthusiasm and unique ways of viewing the artistic environment will inspire and encourage me as I continue to seek personal continued growth. Working together with my students allows me to explore new ideas, experiment with new materials, and examine new teaching methods. I find nothing better than instilling the love for the artistic world into the hearts and minds of children and adolescents and seeing the excitement and pride at what they’ve created. I love to educate from my heart to a community of growing individuals that exude passion, innocence, amazement and pure wonder.
