It’s hard to believe we are at the end of our second-grade year. It has been a pleasure to get to know your child, to share our faith with them, and to see them grow.

Next week, we will read our last story Now and Ben, continue with the practice pages and spelling work, but we will not have spelling homework or Lesson 30 tests. We will continue with math and have our last chapter test on Wednesday, May 21. There will be math homework to prepare for our test. We have completed our lessons for First Communion. What a beautiful Mass for the children! We are honoring Mary this month of May in many ways. The children drew beautiful pictures of Mary using her many names. We are praying the Rosary and visiting the grotto. We are making our final card for the sweet nursing home residents. We have enjoyed this service project this year.

The next two weeks are short due to Memorial Day weekend. We have no school on Friday, May 23rd or Monday, May 26th. We will have a popsicle party on the playground on Tuesday, May 27th!

This summer, have your children read some great books. They can do mini book reports, write stories, and find new interests to keep them on level for the third grade. The math workbooks will be coming home. Chapters 10-12 are excellent practice for the third-grade curriculum. On a rainy, slow day at home, encourage them to do a little work, and keep up the flash cards of math facts.

Being a second-grade teacher, is a blessing for me. I get to come to school each day and talk about the love of Jesus, being the best versions of ourselves, and our Catholic faith. The children love learning, sharing thoughts, and practicing their faith. Please continue the gift of Mass this summer, and on your travels find a new church to visit.

Dear Parents,

I am so happy to start my thirteenth year as the second-grade teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes!

My husband, Jim, and I have three children. They all graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes, Cardinal Gibbons, and the University of Notre Dame. Our oldest, Colum, received his PhD in Theology from Notre Dame. Colum and his wife Katie, a NICU nurse, live in Providence, Rhode Island, where Colum is a theology professor at Providence College. They have three darling children, James (7), Brigid (4), and Fiona (1). Patrick is our second son and is an attorney. After finishing a clerkship with Judge Raymond Kethledge of the Sixth Circuit, Patrick will be joining the law firm of Williams & Connolly LLP in Washington, D.C. in October. Our youngest, Maggie, and her husband Zach have our precious granddaughter, Lucy, who will turn two on September 14th. They are expecting identical twin boys in November. They live in Hawaii and are stationed at Hickam Air Force Base. Zach is a fighter pilot who flies F-22s. Maggie works remotely for the Department of Homeland Security as a security analyst.

I attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia where I received a degree in Early Childhood Education. I taught for a year at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Macon before moving to Durham with my husband where I taught at Immaculata Catholic School. After our children were all in school, I volunteered as a parent at OLL, became a substitute teacher for grades K-8, was an assistant teacher in fifth grade for five years, and finally became the second-grade teacher here at Lourdes!

Catholic education is very important to our family, and I feel truly blessed to be able to teach in a loving community that puts faith first. Thank you for entrusting your children to our care here at OLL.
