Sense of self management during early years

Self-management is our ability to manage our behaviors, thoughts, and emotions in a conscious and productive way. Someone with strong self-management skills knows what to do and how to act in different situations.

Self-management skills can be developed in children as young as preschoolers. They can be used to teach children to pay attention to their own behavior and to complete activities or engage in interactions using appropriate behavior. Self-management can help children use appropriate play and social interaction skills, participate in classroom routines, and engage in instructional activities. Self-management can be used to teach children what is expected of them, such as tasks they are supposed to do. Self-management procedures can help children keep track of whether or not they completed their tasks. Children can learn to monitor their own behavior and control their own actions through using self-management techniques.

Few tips on how to encourage self management in young children-

Create an environment where self-control is consistently rewarded-

Many a times, its not self-control that the child may lack, they may lack motivation.

A student who won’t cooperate in the classroom might seem like the poster child for poor self-regulation. But give him his favorite set of Legos or a beloved video game, and he’s all focus, persistence, and drive. They need to find enjoyment in the things they are asked to do, and that’s where they need our help. Kids benefit when we remove temptations and distractions, and create environments that reward self-restraint.

Support young children with timely reminders-

It’s hard to stick with the program if you don’t remember the rules, and young children have more trouble keeping directions in mind. They are easily distracted. So it’s helpful to remind young children about our expectations.

Give them a Break-

A creature who sticks with the same old work routine, never taking a break, is apt to miss important changes in the environment. By taking time out to play and explore, we increase our chances of discovering profitable new opportunities.

Whichever account is correct, the upshot is the same: If you ask a child to go straight from one unpleasant duty to the next, self-control is likely to suffer.

Giving kids a break can help them re-charge, and it’s also a good way to learn. Studies suggest that kids learn faster when lessons are shorter and separated by some downtime.

Encourage self reflection, planning and learning from failures-

Instill the right mindset for tackling challenges and learning from failure. We need to assure them that failures are normal, but we need to learn from our failures to do better in future.

Encourage children to practice planning, but support them when situation does not proceed as planned and guide them about how they can plan better and succeed next time.

Its important to remember that kids need timely reminders to stay on track, and concrete, practical advice for staying motivated, overcoming obstacles, and sticking to a plan. When self-management procedures are carefully implemented, positive changes in behavior can be expected.

Music - feeling Patriotic

Instilling values of patriotism in children helps them to become responsible citizens. India is a great country with a rich culture and heritage. Loving and appreciating your country is a very patriotic attitude. Not only is patriotism about feeling pride in your country, it is about taking that pride a step further and putting it into action. Our little learners showcased patriotism as they learnt patriotic songs during their music sessions.

ENGLISH - NURSERY - FUN WITH LETTERS I AND J

One of the important aspects of Literacy is the development of letter recognition and fine motor skills so that they can be strengthened to be able to hold a pencil that will eventually produce the written letter or word.

Our Nursery Learners were introduced to the letters Ii and Jj. They were able to recognize the uppercase and lowercase letters with basic phonic sounds, jolly phonics songs and reproduce its associated pictures. Through showcasing a video and story based on the letters they have learnt a few new vocabulary words and developed their communication skills.

The fun and magic activity on letter I was conducted with our little learners, where they had to draw print letter I with the help of white crayon or wax saying one standing and 2 sleeping lines (top and bottom) makes letter I. It was not visible to the learners as it was written with a white crayon. However, once they painted blue water colour on it suddenly they saw the magic, the letter I was clearly visible now. They were super excited to see their final presentation.

Another Art and craft activity was conducted with our learners related to uppercase letter J. They were asked to tear the marble paper into small pieces and paste it on the print letter J. This activity helped them to increase their concentration and developed their fine motor skills.

Such engagement helps the learners to recognize and know the letter formation and improve their kinesthetic skill, eye-hand coordination and critical thinking skill.

MATH - NURSERY - PALM PRINT WITH BLUE PAINT

Color plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live. Color can sway thinking, change actions, and cause reactions.

Blue colour calls to mind feelings of calmness or serenity. Blue is often seen as a sign of stability and reliability.

Colors are indeed the smiles of nature. Our nursery learners got an opportunity to recognize, visualize, discover and explore the colour BLUE by showcasing video and many real objects such as blueberries, blue jeans, blue paint, ribbon, blue crayon and many more blue things around them. These are excellent ways for kids to be more creative and artistic.

We conducted an interesting engagement for our Nursery Learners where they applied BLUE watercolour on their palm and printed on the blue colour tinted paper downward position as it looks like jelly fish then they placed googly eyes and drew smiley faces. They realized that Blue Palm Print jelly Fish was swimming in the blue ocean.

Such engagement helps the child to improve their eye-hand coordination, thinking, creative and fine motor skills and also helps them to understand and differentiate the colors. It also helps them to develop their imagination.

MATH - NURSERY - Learning NUMBER 2

Number sense is so important for our young learners because it promotes confidence and encourages flexible thinking. Children have different learning styles and they start noticing numbers at an early age so practicing a lot with numbers gives the child knowledge and mastery in math skills.

We conducted an Engagement for our little learners where they were introduced to count number- 2 with any two objects. They would love to count their favourite toys, crayons, cookies so that they clearly understood the concept number 2 with its value. They were asked to trace number 2 on different mediums by using their pointer finger. They had to form number 2 by using pulses such as green peas, kidney beans, and peanuts. They placed pulses in the form of number 2 and made 2 coloured clay balls as its value. Our learners thoroughly enjoyed forming number 2 through different mediums and made 2 clay balls which looked so colourful.

Such an activity helps the child to develop their cognitive motor skills, brain and aesthetic development.

Citizenship - Junior KG - Paper Plane

Toddlers love the rustling sound of paper. Be it newspaper for paper planes or boats floating in puddles. Transforming a piece of plain paper into a shape that a toddler can reckon with is an experience that is truly enjoyed by little ones and parents alike. Paper folding for toddlers is a fascinating and creative craft. Folding paper is an interesting way to help toddlers work on their fine motor skills. Apart from being a fun activity, the educational benefits of paper folding are many. Folding origami helps children to create something new and interesting. It increases their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills too. This is why origami is taught in schools as part of the curriculum. It makes children more creative, inventive and constructive. We did an interesting engagement where our learners got a chance to make they own paper plane. For this engagement they had taken paper and they had folded it to resemble a plane.

Such activities help learners in sequential memory, concentration, ability to follow directions, eye/hand coordination, spatial perception and fine and gross motor skills.

ENGLISH - Junior KG - LETTER (Q)

The ABCs are the building blocks of language Learning. Alphabet learning begins early in a child's life. Simply concentrate on a few letters at a time, and allow your child to see, hear and experience that letter in a variety of ways. The most important of all is to make the learning fun. We conducted a fun activity for our learners which was tearing paper and making letter Q. For this activity our learners were asked to draw a big Q. Then tear different colour papers into small pieces and stick it on letter Q.

Tearing is a fine motor activity that requires strength and endurance with the small muscles of the hand. Tearing paper helps children to strengthen the muscles of the fingers and hands. A simple activity that encourages other skills such as a tripod grasp (using the thumb, index, and middle fingers) and eye hand coordination, teaches math and engineering skills, learn geometric shapes, enhance logical thinking. Lots of practice with this can help with good handwriting.

Stream - Junior KG - Popsicle Painting

Popsicle sticks are commonly used for popsicles and kids crafts. Popsicle sticks comes in several different sizes and colours. They are very attractive and kids can use them in variety of ways. Kids enjoy playing with the Popsicle whether it is counting, or re arranging them to form shapes or lines. They love to hold it because of the wooden texture. We conducted a fun activity where we asked our learners to take some popsicles and arrange them one below the other to form a rectangular piece and draw anything like duck, butterfly, tree or anything they wish to and then colour it.

Painting and colouring is an effective way to build fine motor skills, because it requires your toddler to use a pincher grasp to hold the paintbrush. It also encourages them to move their hand, wrist and arm to create an image on the paper. Dipping the paintbrush into the paint also enhances fine motor skills.

Curious explorer- senior kg - colourful rain

Children love to play in rain. They love to sing rain songs with action, as they know that in rainy season we see a rainbow in sky which is very colorful with seven different colors. Here they get to discover and explore nature and surroundings. We conducted a COLORFUL RAIN engagement for our Senior KG learners where they had to fill half the transparent jar with water. Then they had to put 10 tablespoons of oil and add food colors in it. Later, they were asked to observe the colorful rain drops visible in the jar.

English- senior kg - Trace Rhyming Words in salt

Learners love using salt trays. It is fun, tactile, visual and best way to teach tracing of words with sounds of letters and forming words. Finger tracing activities are one of the best forms of play-way methods. Our Senior KG learners got an opportunity to develop their fine motor skills by doing an activity “TRACING RHYMING WORDS IN SALT” where they had to trace the rhyming words given by teacher in salt with their fingers. Conducting sensory activities help learners to store these memories for a long time.

Such engagement also helps the child to improve their critical thinking, eye-hand co-ordination and fine motor skills. Learners were very happy and energetic while doing the activity.

Math - senior kg - Make a Square Robot of Paper

The world around us is made of different shapes. Understanding that we have special shapes we name and that they are in our everyday lives is important. Recognizing and understanding shapes is a partner to learning to count. When we teach learners shapes, we help to lay a foundation for basic math skills. Creating art with shapes is one of the best play way methods to teach learners about shapes. We conducted an activity for our Senior KG learners which was “MAKE A ROBOT” of square shape. For this activity learners had to make square shape cutouts of medium and small sizes. Later, they first had to stick the medium square cutout at the centre of the paper for face. Then they had to stick small square shape cutouts for its hands and legs at some distance. Later, they were asked to join the hands and legs by drawing two lines with green color crayon and then makes its features with black sketch pen or marker pen. Learning shapes for kids can help the learner develop many essential skills, including math, vocabulary, and problem-solving. Understanding the basics of different shapes and the number of sides of each from an early age can help the learner grasp other geometric concepts as they get older. These are the key elements to setting the learners up for success on their learning journey.
