The purpose of this site is to connect classrooms all over the world by sharing standardized albatross bolus data collected by student scientists. Since 2008, Oikonos has shared 2,300 boluses from the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands with educators from 41 states in the U.S. and 7 countries.

By using the tools and data collection forms provided on this site, student scientists can collect standardized data from each bolus that can be compared across classrooms. Data uploaded to the site is available for educators and students to use for data analysis exercises and class projects.

Bolus dissection activities can be accompanied by Lesson 4 of the free Winged Ambassadors curriculum. Lesson 4 examines the albatross diet via boluses, or the regurgitation chicks make before fledging. Students learn how marine debris is fed albatross chicks by their parents, and examine sources of marine plastic pollution. Hands-on activities include a virtual bolus dissection, and making a creative model of a bolus using everyday debris in their house.
