Team Information
What is Speech? Speech is competitive public speaking.
The big goal of speech is to both show off and improve your performance and public speaking skills.
At the Junior High level, you are competing against yourself. At each meet, you’ll be critiqued on your performance and given a grade/score. Your goal is to improve your skills. At the last meet of the season, you’ll compete against other speakers.
At the Varsity level, you’ll be critiqued on your performance and given a score, but you’ll also be competing against other speakers every meet.
There are 13 different categories in Speech. For some of them, you write your own speech. For others, you perform a text that someone else wrote.
Categories: Creative Expression, Discussion (Varsity only), Duo, Drama, Extemporaneous Reading, Extemporaneous Speaking, Great Speeches, Humorous, Informative, Original Oratory, Poetry, Prose, Storytelling
With so many options, Speech is a great activity for a variety of people, and students can find a style that fits their interests.
Who can join Speech? Students in grades 6-12.
Our Junior High (grades 6-8 and novice 9th graders) season runs November-early February and competes in the Two Rivers Conference.
Our Varsity (grades 7-12) season runs November-April and competes in the Great River Conference and MSHSL Section 7A.
Students in grades 7-8 can participate in both Junior High and Varsity even though they only need to pay one activity fee.
