Adelaide Underpass Zoom Meeting- Tuesday November 10 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM

On November 10,2020 ,City Of London Staff will be hosting a Zoom meeting for neighbourhoods adjacent to the proposed Adelaide Underpass.This will be your opportunity to see and provide comment on the latest designs for the underpass including the urban designs and finishes that are being considered.

Please note that this is a targeted consultation with people who live , work or own properties in neighbourhoods adjacent to the underpass. Please refer to the attached letter (pdf below) for information about how you can attend the meeting as well as ways to provide your input over a two week period. We hope that you will be available attend,the meeting and/or use the other ways provided to give us your input.

OEV Chalk Contest Winners

Residents Concerns about Traffic Speeding through the Neighbourhood:

On Thursday, September 24, 2020, a meeting took place between members of the City of London Transportation and Planning staff, residents from Lorne Avenue, Princess Avenue, Elias Street and Old East Village Community Association representatives. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss residents concerns about increased speeding on these streets attributed to traffic diversion from Dundas Street .

As a result of the meeting the Traffic Division has initiaited the following action:

• Speed & Volume studies were started today on Lorne Avenue between Ontario Street and English Street and on Elias Street between Ontario Street and English Street.

• Centre line markers will be installed tomorrow ( September 30, 2020 ) on Lorne Avenue, Princess Avenue and Elias Street. Depending on the location, there may be one centre marker or three markers structured to restrict parking so that the road is not reduced to one lane wide.

Hello Everyone,

I am contacting you to share information regarding advance construction activities that will be happening this fall in preparation for the construction of the new Adelaide Street Underpass in 2021.

Properties located at 600 Adelaide Street North and 625 Adelaide Street North have been purchased by the City for this project and are slated for demolition. It is anticipated that this demolition will begin in early September and completed by the end of September. There may be additional demolition work required through the fall of 2020.

Enbridge (Union Gas) is also currently working on the project site. The following utility companies are also expected to begin work in fall 2020; London Hydro, Bell Canada, and Rogers Communications. Our goal is to keep McMahen Park open for public use as much as possible throughout these advance utility works. Additionally, CP Rail will be realigning its most northerly track this fall and we will keep you informed as more details of their schedule are available.

Social Justice Protest to Take Place This Saturday

Right now, protests for social justice for people of color are happening all over the world. This includes a protest in London Ontario on Saturday June 6 at 3:00pm in Victoria Park. This protest is being organized by the London Ontario chapter of Black Lives Matter. More information about these protests can be found can be found on the Black Lives Matter London's Instagram or Black Lives Matter - London Ontario's Facebook

A Facebook post describes the roots of the organization: "We are a local group of 5 young black women who came together following the BLM protest in Toronto. Being inspired by this, we wanted to bring one to our city here in London, Ontario."

According to CTV News, Mayor Ed Holder has said that the city of London is "working collaboratively with the organizers of the march". The Middlesex Health Unit is going to have a presence to help ensure that there are supports in place to reduce the risk of spreading Covid19 during the protest. Steve Williams, London's Chief of Police, has said "We are there to listen, and a lot of our officers are supporting these protests as well."

These protests highlight the need to amplify the voices of people of color who are frequently not heard or ignored. If you would like to support black people, indigenous people, and other people of color in the OEV community and beyond, please take a look at these resources:

In these times of physical distancing, building upon community connections and support is more important than ever – people are echoing this on the news, on social media, and in other ways. Continuing to build the Old East Village Community Exchange so people can come together, when they can’t really come together, seems timely. People are looking for things to do from home, looking for ways to stay connected, and looking for ways to support each other. Residents and local businesses want to support each other now and during our recovery stage. Each one of us can assist by actively (and virtually!) engaging with our neighbours.

Notice of Advance Construction Work

Adelaide Street Underpass and McMahen Park. Tentative Start Date April 2020.

The City of London, Engineering Department has requested that the following letter be circulated regarding some necessary advance construction work for the Adelaide Street Underpass. The work is tentatively planned for April 2020 and will accommodate the Adelaide Street Underpass construction scheduled in 2021.

The City has sent this letter only to the property owners adjacent to Adelaide Street within the project limits. A project signboard will also be placed in McMahen Park. They have kindly asked that you disseminate the letter and the information it contains to your community groups, peers and neighbours.

Late Notice Request for Volunteers

The Western Fair District Market is requesting volunteer assistance to manage COVID -19 hygiene and social distancing protocols at the market on Saturday March 21, 2020 and Sunday March22, 2020.

If you are available to help, and not in an “at risk” category, this is an opportunity to support our local businesses while they endeavor to keep us supplied with fresh food.

Volunteers Required: A total of 6 volunteers, 2 per shift are required to cover three shifts. These are:

• Saturday March 21, between 8am and 12pm - 2 people

• Saturday March 21, between 12pm and 3pm – 2 people

• Sunday March 22, between 10am and 2pm - 2 people

Duties: Volunteers will be located at the West entrance to welcome customers and direct them to the closest hand sanitizer station upon entrance and exit.

Safety and Equipment: Volunteers will be supplied with masks, vests, gloves and people counters. The Market has secured trained screeners for the Market on Saturday and are waiting to hear if the screening service is available for Sunday.

Temporary Location Closures

Libro Credit Union has taken the difficult decision to temporarily close a number of locations, listed below, as of Wednesday, March 18.

The following locations are temporarily closing and please know these locations have not been affected directly by the virus:

• Old East Village, London

• Downtown Kitchener

• Windsor Accelerator

• Forest

• Woodslee

All Libro staff have been asked to follow government guidelines, including adopting social distancing, and the tight space at some of these locations makes that difficult. We also have limited staff available to run these locations.

Reducing Hours

Our remaining Libro locations will remain open though we are reducing hours further to 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. All locations will now be closed on Saturdays.

Protecting Staff and Owners

We are taking special measures to protect staff and Owners. They include:

Social distancing: We ask everyone to maintain a distance of at least two metres from each other.

Self-isolating: If you are feeling sick, have been in contact with anyone sick, or have been out of the country (including the US) recently, you will not be permitted to enter our locations. We ask that you contact us by phone or email instead.

Any Libro staff who have been out of the country recently are being required to self-isolate for 14 days.

Doing business in new ways: We ask all Owners to use ATMs, online services or phone options, wherever possible. Visit our Ways to Bank page to learn more.

Meetings postponed: No Libro events will take place until further notice. Our Annual General Meeting, planned for April 4, will take place online only.

We are also making a pledge to all of Libro’s 714 staff. To work with staff individually to understand their needs and to make sure they know their health and wellbeing is at the forefront of our thinking, this includes their financial wellbeing.

We are determined to maintain strong standards of Owner service, while also supporting our staff and giving them all the options for working that we can provide.

OEV Winter Soiree - Cancelled

Dundas Cycling Projects

On Thursday, February 27, 2020, the City of London is hosting an open house for two Dundas Street infrastructure projects designed to improve east-west cycling connections and better links to transit:

• Dundas Cycle Track

• This project will connect Downtown with Old East Village by creating a permanent, separated east-west cycling route on Dundas Street between Wellington Street and Adelaide Street, and on William Street between Dundas Street and Queens Avenue. The project is part of the broader East-West Bikeway, designed to strengthen east-west cycling connections.

• Dundas-Thames Valley Parkway (TVP) Connection

• Today there is a break in cycling infrastructure between Dundas Street and the Thames Valley Parkway. This project will slightly shift the alignment of Dundas Street to better align the intersection and street with Dundas Place and create a continuous connection in the cycling network heading onto Dundas Street from the TVP.

The purpose of the open house is to collect Londoners’ feedback to assess design options for each project. City staff and engineering consultants will be available to share information, collect input, and answer questions on both projects.

Please see below for details about an upcoming Community Information Meeting for a new build by Medallion Properties at Dundas and Hewitt Streets. We would strongly encourage residents with an interest in redevelopment in Old East Village to look closely at the Medallion proposal. Without rendering an opinion on the merits of the proposal at this point, we would point out that that this building has a very large footprint ('base') that seems incongruent with the City's preference for point towers with significant step-backs from the street level podium. The initial renderings, especially along Hewitt Street, portray a building that could be seen by some as monolithic and out-of-scale.

The Old East Village Community Association wishes to draw your attention to a public meeting about major infrastructure improvements that will occur over a two year period, on Dundas Street between Adelaide Street and Ontario Street ,from 2020 to 2022. Infrastructure improvements are also scheduled for English Street, in 2021.

We would welcome your attendance at this meeting to learn more about the initiatives. City staff will be prepared to hear your comments and answer your questions ,including the management of traffic that will be diverted from Dundas Street to Queens Avenue during the construction period.

The Manager of the English Street Infrastructure Renewal Project will also be on hand to answer early questions.

Friday, 30 August 2019 - Today, more than 65 families who were evacuated for the evening of August 14, 2019 received support - because of the incredible generosity of Londoners. Cheques for $250, as well as vouchers for donated goods and lists of discounted and donated services, were delivered by hand within the evacuation area. Neighbours also canvassed the affected areas to connect with individuals and families who have not yet been reached.

For those who were evacuated but have not yet received support, please complete this online form to share contact information, so that we can distribute support as quickly as possible.

A process is currently being established where the most affected individuals and families can access more funding over the short, medium, and longer term. This funding will be distributed on a needs basis. More details on this process will be communicated as soon as possible.

Families are actively working with insurers to determine coverage and needs, and this takes time. In the unlikely event that more funds have been donated than are needed by the families most affected, the families together with community organizations will determine how the funds should be used to support other needs and have a positive community impact in Old East Village.

We thank Londoners for their generous support for the families affected by last week’s disaster. Individuals and organizations wishing to give are encouraged to continue to do so through the Woodman Families Fund at Libro. Special deliveries to Woodman families!

Friday, 23 August 2019 - Today, the families most highly impacted by the explosion on Woodman Ave received some special deliveries: care packages from the London community. These packages were delivered by volunteers from the OEV neighbourhood, designated as buddies to support the families over the weeks and months ahead. The care packages included gift bags with letters of support, donated gift cards, and some initial financial support. Each family also received a bin of donated food and goods, based on what the families identified that they need at this time.

In the words of one individual receiving a care package, "I am so overwhelmed, and feel so much support and love. This makes me feel like everything will be okay."

Thank you to the London community for your remarkable generosity. You made a few families' days today!

$50,000 in initial financial support being provided to Woodman families

Wednesday, 21 August 2019 - Since the tragic explosion and fire on Woodman Ave that displaced several families one week ago, the support from Londoners has been overwhelming. As individuals, businesses, and organizations, Londoners have been donating cash, goods, and services quickly and generously. We are so proud of our neighbours and fellow Londoners for the support that they continue to show for our community.

The families directly impacted by the explosion, especially those who are still displaced from their homes, need our help now and over the weeks and months to come. They also deserve peace and privacy during this difficult and disruptive time in their lives.

Yesterday, a group of community partners met to coordinate and streamline the process of distributing the donations of cash, goods and services that have come forward. This statement provides an update on this effort.

• Families most impacted: immediate short-term financial assistance of $2000 will be provided this week to the families who have been most severely impacted and remain displaced from their homes. Each family is being supported by a designated neighbour volunteer, who has assembled a package of donated goods and services that meet the family’s immediate needs. This arrangement aims to respect privacy, build relationships, provide a single point of contact for accessing community supports, and ensure families feel supported as the healing process begins. Community organizations are also working together to ensure that the short and longer term housing needs of all families are being met.

• Families evacuated: individuals and families who were evacuated from their homes on the evening of August 14 will be receiving $250 in cash support, to cover the immediate costs associated with the evacuation (replacing food, purchasing goods required in the first 24 hours). These families will also have access to the donated goods. We are asking individuals and families who were evacuated to complete this online form to share contact information, so that we can distribute support as quickly as possible. Door-to-door canvassing in the evacuated area will also be taking place next week in an effort to ensure that no one is missed.

Based on these allocations, approximately $50,000 from the London community is being distributed over the next week. The total amount of funds which have come forward is still being tallied, as funds have been collected in multiple places and across many organizations. A number of fundraisers are still taking place this week, and some funds have been pledged but not yet received. We request that all funds raised be channeled to the Woodman Families Fund account at Libro. Donating through this centralized fund ensures that all donations are tracked, and that we can fully account for how funds which have been so generously provided are put to use.

Tuesday, 20 August 2019 — Since the tragic explosion and fire on Woodman Ave that displaced several families, the support from Londoners has been overwhelming. We are so proud of our neighbours and our fellow Londoners for all of the support that they continue to show for our community.

We want to thank everyone who has contributed so far, as well as the people and organizations who have helped to receive and organize the donations. Your outstanding generosity is remarkable and greatly appreciated.

The families directly impacted by the explosion, especially those who are still displaced from their homes, need our help now and over the days and weeks to come. The OEVCA is working closely with multiple community partners to streamline the support for families, aiming to make it as simple as possible for families to access the support they need - while also providing fairness and transparency in how donations are allocated.

Everyone wants to see families receive the support they need as quickly as possible. We are currently in the process of connecting with the families still displaced from their homes in order to provide immediate financial support. As such, the OEVCA is in the process of coordinating those efforts so that short-term and long-term needs are met by those who require it most.

In an effort to make this process as simple as possible for the families, we are asking for the support of OEVers and Londoners to help us coordinate this effort:

As we continue along this difficult path of rebuilding, we will endeavour to communicate all of the progress that is being made, and continue to offer any and all supports at our disposal to those affected by this disaster, until our community is once again made whole.
