Friday, February 15th will still be an early closing day with OCHS closing at 1:08 pm. Teachers will be available to speak with parents from 1:30 - 4:00 pm due to Parent/Teacher Conferences being canceled on Feb. 18th. Varsity Boys Basketball Team will travel to Albemarle HS today, 2/15, to play in Round 1 of the 5D Regional Tournament - game will start at 6 pm

Varsity Girls Basketball Team will travel to Harrisonburg HS today, 2/15, to play in Round 1 of the 5D Regional Tournament - game will start at 6 pm

Due to Orange County Schools closing for 6 days due to bad weather ALL Orange County Schools will be open on Monday, February 18th for students. Regular classes will be held that day.

Indoor Track Region 5D Championships results:

Congratulations to the indoor track teams on their performances at the Regional Championships 2/13 - The girls finished in 6th place as a team out of 12 teams. Jasmine Tompkins is the Regional Champion in the shot put. She threw 38 feet 1.5 inches to set a region RECORD for the event. Hannah Snodgrass is the Regional Champion in the 55 meter hurdles. She ran a new personal record time of 8.69 seconds which is also the region RECORD. Jasmyn Glaze took 8th place with a time of 9.96 seconds. Hannah advances to the the state championships. Hannah was also second in the high jump with a jump of 4 feet 10 inches. Daija Harris and Jada Reeves tied for third place at 4 feet 8 inches. All three ladies will be advancing to the state championships. DeSante Clark was 6th in the long jump with a jump of 14 feet 10 inches. She will be advancing to states in the event. DeSante was also 6th in the triple jump with a jump of 31 feet 1 inch.

On the boys side we had two scorers. Ethan Pettyjohn was sixth in the two-mile run with a time of 10 minutes and 22 seconds. Kyle Williams was seventh in the long jump with a jump of 18 feet 11.5 inches. Elijah Suggs had already qualified for the state championships earlier in the season.


Scheduling for the 2019-2020 School Year

Counselors will be meeting with every high school student individually between now and spring break to discuss course selections for next year. We encourage all students to review the Program of Studies with a parent or guardian prior to this meeting and be prepared to discuss your goals and interests with your counselor.

Rising 9th grade students will meet with the middle school counselors to make their course selections.

Swim Team News: Shout out to Matthew Marquis who placed 6th in his 200 IM and 5th in the 100 Fly at regionals, making him able to swim at states. He dropped an impressive 6 seconds in his 100 IM, 3 seconds in his 100 fly and dropped a second in his 50 freestyle with a time of 22.94 seconds. He has worked hard this season to achieve this.

OCHS SENIORS:

1) The Local Scholarship Application is now open for you to complete. The application is a Google form that has been sent to your Orange County email. Please see Ms. Swisher in the counseling center with any questions. Other local scholarships available for students to apply for are shared with you via email and the scholarship website. Paper copies of the applications are available in Ms. Swisher's office and she is happy to mail the applications if you return them to her! As we go into the next month or so, more scholarships will be available and shared with you.

"On Saturday, Jan. 19 the OCHS Winterguard opened their competitive season at Powhatan High School and came in first place in their class. Congratulations to the indoor guard members!"

On Saturday, Feb. 9, the OCHS Winterguard competed at E.C. Glass High School. The guard was performing at their second competition of the year, and like the 1st time, they won their class.

On Saturday, Feb. 8th, both Indoor Drumlines were in competition at E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, VA. - The JV Drumline performed first to begin their competitive season and took 2nd place in their class. Director: Garrett Ellinger - The Varsity Drumline performed there new routine of the season and took first place in the open class, which is the highest class in which a high school ensemble is able to compete in. OCHS Wrestling Team takes 3rd place at the Region 5D Championship on Saturday, Feb. 8 - Champion: Chance Bowers at 160 lbs. - 2nd place: Nicky Benner & Ray Pierce - 3rd place: Wyatt Mills & David Steigler - 4th place: Cale Carr - 5th place: Alex Burley & Truth Wilson - 6th place: Blake Wilson; KJ Taylor; Taylor Jenkins & Aaron Ratcliff - Top four in each weight class will compete at States Feb. 15 & 16

Congratulations to the OCHS Robotics Team! The team won the Rockwell Collins Aerospace Innovate Award Saturday, Jan. 5 at the UVA Engineering School FTC competition. This award celebrates a team that thinks outside the box and has the ingenuity and inventiveness to make their designs come to life. It is given to the team that has the most innovative and creative robot design solution to any specific components of the game. The judges for this competition were UVA Engineering Professors and professional engineers. The OCHS team used their skills they learned in Ms. Jamerson’s Technical Drawing & Engineering Design courses to design, draw and create, using the 3-D printer, a bearing & bar mechanism for latching their robot so that it would suspend. OCHS won this award over 35 other teams-most of which are sponsored by major corporations. The team finished this competition ranked 13th out of 36. They advanced to the state tournament which will be held in Richmond on Saturday, February 2nd.

The OCHS track team traveled to Fork Union for the New Year's Opener on Saturday, Jan 5. 17 teams were competing. Lots of athletes turned in good performances: here are some highlights:Jasmine Tompkins won the shot put. Hannah Snodgrass took first place in the 55 meter hurdles. Cydney Downin's 34' 7" triple jump placed her second and was the second longest jump in school history. Ethan Pettyjohn placed 3rd in the mile run and 4th in the 2-mile run Jada Reeves high jumped 5 feet to take third place in the high jump. Jayden Warren placed sixth in the 300 meter dash. Trevor Hitt placed 7th in the 1000 meter run. Jada Reves ran an 8.09 second 55-meter dash which is the tenth fastest in OCHS history. Hannah Snodgrass' high jump of 4' 6" ties her for #9 on our all time list. Jewell Henley ran a 7:27 mile which is a new personal record. Alaina Lewis had a new person record of 24' 6" in the shot put. Rodney Zummo had new personal records in the mile and two-mile run.
