The directions on this page can be used for help with OCPS Chromebooks and for students working offline. On this page, you can find directions to support:
These directions are for Chromebooks picked up with a USB device (K-5 students) and without a USB device (6-12 students).
Log into the Chromebook using your OCPS email address and password. This username/password is written on the cover sheet provided at the Chromebook pickup. If you cannot find/remember your username or password, please contact your teacher.
If a USB device was issued to you and is not already plugged into the Chromebook, plug it in at this time. The USB ports are located on the sides of the Chromebook. If a USB was not issued to you, move to the next step.
Next, click on the Files app. This app looks like a file folder and is located on the bottom of the screen in the task tray.
If you are using a USB drive, it will appear under the list of files on the left. Double click on the USB drive to open it.
If you are not using a USB, select My files and then select the folder that is labeled with your name.
The offline access to your Google Drive has been enabled on your account. You can use this offline access to create new Google Docs, Slides, Sheets or Drawings by following the steps below:
Locate and select the Google Drive icon in the app tray on your Chromebook home screen.
Select the plus sign next to the word New on the left side of your screen.
The Docs, Slides, Sheets and Drawings icons will be darker than all the others
Choose the type of file type you want to create
Name your file and choose start editing
At the top of your file you will see “All changes saved offline”
Your file will be stored in your drive offline and will sync to your online Google Drive once you log in to the internet on your account at a later time.
This is an accessibility tool that is already enabled on OCPS student Chromebooks. This tool provides the capability of selecting text to be read aloud. Follow the instructions below to access and use the tool.
Open a document from the Chromebooks file app in the app tray.
At the same time, press the magnifying glass key on the Chromebook keyboard and highlight with the mouse pad the text that you would like to be read aloud.
After making your selection, the text selected will be read aloud.
This app is already installed on your student Chromebook. This app will help you write on documents that otherwise would not let you type on such as PDF files. You can use the following steps to access and use the app.
IMPORTANT: You will have to create an account with Kami from the Chromebook while connected to the internet first before you can use this app offline. When you create your account, sign up using your school Google account. Choose K-12 and select student use. Once you have logged in once to Kami using your Chromebook, you can access it offline anytime.
Locate your app tray on your Chromebook home screen. This should be at the bottom or on the side of the screen and have icons such as the Google Drive and Google Classroom symbol.
Locate the and select the empty white circle which is the app launcher. This will show you all available apps on your Chromebook.
Select the Kami app. This is a purple circle with a “K” in the middle.
This will open a tab where Kami will load.
Choose to open a file from your Chromebook to begin editing in Kami.
After editing, select the disk at the top right to save. It will say that you have unsaved changes in the Kami Cloud Sync. It will remain this way until the Chromebook is re-connected to an internet source at some point.
While offline, you can continue to access any file you used in Kami by opening the Kami app. Your files can be found in the “recent” section. This is where your files will be stored until you are reconnected to the internet.
