Summer Reading Assignment
OCSI middle & high school students are required to read TWO books (class-assigned book and choice book) over the summer in order to maintain and build their reading skills. Research shows that consistent reading over the school break is necessary for students to stay academically on target with their peers. Reading correlates with high vocabulary, good writing, knowledge of the world, and empathy, among other things. We hope students will enjoy reading many more than the minimum requirement and will share their finds with us when they return to school in the fall!
The two required books will consist of the following:
Class-Assigned Book: One book assigned to the grade as a whole.
Choice Book: One fiction or nonfiction book chosen from the appropriate class list.
OCSI will issue the class-assigned book during the last week of school (if the student has already registered for the upcoming school year) or at the point that registration is complete (if after the last week of school). The issued books are as follows for students entering...
6th grade: The City of Ember
7th grade: Where the Red Fern Grows
8th grade: The Pearl
9th grade: The Outsiders
10th grade: The Girl with the White Flag (CP) or In His Steps (Honors)
11th grade: The Old Man and the Sea (CP) or David and Goliath (AP)
12th grade: Choose two books from the class list
Students are responsible for obtaining the choice book (from the class book list). They may obtain the books in one of the following ways:
Purchasing through personal means, such as Amazon.com or Amazon.co.jp (click on English Books category).
Borrowing the books from the OCSI library or from a classroom library before school is out.
Borrowing the book from the OCSI eplatform library (ebooks and audiobooks): https://ocsi.eplatform.co.
Borrowing the books through other means, such as an on-base library or Kindle library.
Some books that are in the public domain may be read or downloaded online for free or from websites such as Project Gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/.
