The trip culminates at the stunning Krisuvik geothermal fields.

Business Students Support Local Food Bank
On June 18, Grade 10 Business students from Sacred Heart delivered an impressive $8,500 donation to the Stittsville Food Bank—funds raised through the Social Entrepreneurship Program (SEP). Over 170 students across six classes launched one-day food and drink businesses at school, with every dollar of profit going to charity.
This year’s student-run company, Sacred Heart Hope, focused on the UN Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger, learning how food insecurity affects families right here in Stittsville. Enhanced by Shopify and tap payment options, the project reached new heights in accessibility and impact.
We’re proud of our students for using creativity, collaboration, and compassion to make a meaningful difference in our community. Way to go, Grade 10s!

The energy and commitment of the students were palpable throughout the day, as they enthusiastically engaged in a diverse range of activities, all aimed at bolstering this vital initiative. Beyond the fundraising efforts, the day also held a deeply meaningful vigil, providing a space for reflection, remembrance, and solidarity with Cancer Survivors and Victims.
The success of this impactful day would not have been possible without the generous support and participation of the wider community. The Relay for Life Team extends its sincere gratitude to every community member who contributed their time and resources to this worthy endeavor. Furthermore, heartfelt appreciation is extended to the dedicated teachers and students whose collaborative efforts and meticulous planning were instrumental in bringing this lovely and significant event to fruition. Catholic Education Week and the Papal Election of Leo XIV gave us real opportunities to connect our school to the faith for students. We hosted many teaching sessions about the conclave and had a live stream of the chimney running in the atrium. It was exciting to see students interested in the process with an understanding that the election of a new Pope is indeed a very big deal for the world. We are also excited to send-off a group of senior students who will arrive in Rome on Sunday morning for an experiential Arts-based trip to Italy - maybe they will catch a glimpse of Pope Leo!
Sacred Heart Cake Auction -
We are proud to announce the success of this year's Sacred Heart Cake Auction, where our students, staff, and community came together to raise money for many charities totally over $30,000!
This event was not only a showcase of delicious creativity but also a great demonstration of the citizenship skills we've committed to fostering throughout the school year.
Our students exemplified what it means to be good citizens, actively engaging in our community and extending their hands to those in need. The funds raised will support a variety of charitable organizations that make significant impacts in areas like health care, mental wellness, and community support—truly a reflection of our collective commitment to the greater good.
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone involved in the planning, execution, and participation of the auction. Your enthusiasm and generosity embody the spirit of active citizenship and community service, reinforcing the values of Sacred Heart.

Attendance Really Matters
Looking ahead, the May calendar is full of field trips, sporting events, and celebrations that will have an impact on class time. Maintaining student engagement, recognizing their efforts, and fostering a positive school environment are critical benefits of these important activities.
However, missing class, even for a good reason, can have a negative impact if students are not prepared. Here is a checklist for you to review at home that will help students:
Before being absent:
Students can prepare for missed work by checking Hapara or asking a friend to take good notes
Before Returning to School:
Check Hapara or call friends to get an idea of what was missed
Upon Returning to School:
Arrive early to school to get organized and talk to teachers about the work missed
Arrange a time to speak with teachers - before or after class - to come up with a plan
Helpful Tips to Make up School Work:
Write down a schedule to complete necessary makeup work
Keep talking to teachers and staff. We are here to help. We will work with you on a plan that is achievable - we want you to succeed!

We enter Holy Week this Sunday. We will continue to mark the Lenten season as a school with intentional morning prayer and opportunities in classrooms to learn about its significance then and impact now. We hope all families will have the opportunity to connect and observe the season. Sacred Heart and all OCSB schools are closed on Friday, April 18 and Monday, April 21 to observe the Easter triduum.
If you are looking to connect with a local church, we are connected to Holy Spirit Parish and St. Phillip Parish.
25th Anniversary - Student Plan!
As part of the 25th Anniversary celebrations for Sacred Heart, Student Council is proud to lead a special school-wide initiative: the creation of a commemorative “living-art” mural. This project invites every student and staff member to leave a handprint in our school colours: red, white, and black; on the designated walls on the second floor of the school. Staff members will add their handprints in silver, in honour of the 25-year milestone.
Painting will take place starting on April 23rd, 2025. Students in Grades 9 to 12 will participate first, followed by Grades 7 and 8 later in the weeks to come.
To ensure everyone is comfortable participating, we recommend that students wear clothing they don’t mind possibly getting a small spot of paint on. Alternatively, we will have disposable cover-up ponchos available for any students who wish to protect their clothing.
This mural is not only a celebration of our school’s legacy - it’s a lasting symbol of unity, creativity, and community spirit. We’re looking forward to seeing every student leave their hand mark and name written in Sharpie on this meaningful project!

Students and Parents/Guardians can refer to the OCSB website for the Grade 9 - 12 calendar. These calendars identify the first and last day of school, PD days, Statutory Holidays, Board Holidays, and High School exams. 7/8 Parent-Teacher Interviews
Grade 7/8 Parent-Teacher Interviews are scheduled for (Thursday, February 20). We will provide parents with options for scheduling a 10-minute conference focusing on the recent report card. All interviews will be held in person at Sacred Heart. Report Cards will be made available February 13 through the Parent-Portal on February 13. The link for interviews will be available on February 13.
Interviews are intended for students/parents seeking feedback to meet course expectations if there are present concerns.
Please note that it is not uncommon for our intermediate educators to teach 150 students. If your child is progressing at a level 1/2 (50%-70%), then we encourage you to book an interview with the appropriate teacher. If your child is at a level 3 or above (70%+), then an interview is not required unless the teacher specifically indicates so.
The Learning Skills levels and comments are determined through the collaboration of all of your child's teachers - not just by the homeroom teacher. Should there be multiple N's and S's, then we encourage you to book.
Special note for Arts teachers: please book to see your child's current Arts teacher to discuss progress. Should you have questions about the mark on the report card from the previous arts rotation, then please reach out to that teacher individually instead of booking a spot.
The booking system will be shared and active (February 13 @ 5:00pm). The booking system will close on (Wednesday, February 19).

As we hit the midpoint of the school year, we recognize the hard work and focus of our Grade 9-12 students who have completed their exams and RSTs, as well as our Grade 7 and 8 students who are wrapping up assessments ahead of their Term 1 report cards. We often share stories about success outside the classroom with sports and activities, but success in the classroom is the foundation for overall success.
This time of year also brings a sharp reminder from Mother Nature that winter is here to stay. With the "polar vortex" sweeping across Canada, we encourage all students to dress warmly, especially as our Grade 7 and 8s continue to head outside for recess and physical education classes. Staying active in the fresh air is important, but so is being prepared for the cold!
Looking ahead to February, we’re excited to celebrate Black History Month. Our entire school, Student Council and Black Student Association have been working hard to organize meaningful events and activities that will deepen our understanding and appreciation of Black history, culture, and excellence.

Be Mindful of Allergies in the Community
At Sacred Heart Catholic High School, we are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and caring environment for all students and staff. As part of this commitment, we remind our school community of the importance of being mindful of allergies and sensitivities that exist within our school.
We have students and staff who live with allergies (e.g. pineapple, kiwi, nuts, and perfumed scents). While these items are not banned, we ask that everyone exercise thoughtfulness and care when bringing food or using scented products. Allergic reactions can range from mild to severe, and even trace amounts can cause distress for those affected.
Here are some ways you can help:
Be aware of shared spaces: Consider avoiding high-risk foods or scents in classrooms, common areas, and during school events.
Conversations at home: Discuss with your child the importance of respecting others' health needs and how small actions, like washing hands after eating, can make a big difference.
Label food carefully: If sending treats or food for a shared event, clearly indicate if they contain common allergens like pineapple, nuts or kiwi.

As we settle into the heart of January, the winter chill has certainly made its presence felt! With temperatures dropping this past week, I want to remind all students—yes, even those who think it isn't fashionable —to bundle up and wear jackets when heading outside for lunch. Meanwhile, students in Grades 10-12 are deep into preparations for their upcoming Semester 1 Final Exams, while Grades 9-12 are hard at work completing their Rich Summative Tasks. To support your children during this important time, I encourage parents and guardians to read the information below, which includes key details about the exam schedule and expectations.
Together, we can ensure a successful wrap-up to the semester!

Ottawa Catholic School Board’s Mental Health Lead, Dr. Richard Bolduc, recently shared an attendance resource for parents that you might find useful and interesting. It is from Parents Lifeline (PLEO). Here is an excerpt: “Parents and caregivers often feel more urgency about getting children back to school than the children do. This urgency can come from worries about your child’s future, pressure from the school, or stress about missing work. Dealing with your child’s school attendance can affect your emotions, causing anxiety or frustration. It can also impact your finances if you get calls from the school or can’t go to work. This situation can strain your relationship with your child and cause tension in your family, especially if you and your partner handle it differently or if other children at home are affected.“
This resource provides some solutions to these issues and gives us great hope for what can be done. To read more, click here.

Congratulations to our fall sports teams on a successful season, and very quickly our winter athletes begin their seasons! As we approach the end of the semester, please encourage your child to prepare for upcoming exams - see more information below. Wishing all our families a safe and restful holiday season!

Christmas Hampers - Supporting Families
In SchoolCashOnline you will see an option to support our Community Christmas Campaign by donating to the 7/8 Hamper program/Grinchy Gift Card Giveaway.
All of the proceeds from this SCO fund will go towards families in our community who need a bit of extra support this Christmas season. Please consider donating to SCO or sending a gift card with your child to school. If using SCO, you can do multiple 5$ donations, and your son or daughter will get to target many classrooms with their GGG competition. This is our last week of fundraising!!!
We are very grateful for this generous Sacred Heart community.
National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
On December 6 we remember and honour those who have experienced gender-based violence and mourning those who we have lost to it. This week, Sacred Heart staff and students learned about the 14 women who were murdered at Ecole Polytechnique in 1989 with learning opportunities created by teachers from both Science departments.
Students learned about the victims and created white flowers as a symbol of them and the work that remains.
At Sacred Heart, we believe that creating a future where everyone feels safe and respected, regardless of their gender, is essential. We recognize that achieving a community free from gender-based violence requires a collective effort. We commit to empowering students to educate themselves, their families, and communities about this issue.
Helping Your Child Manage Digital Technology
Digital technologies can support learning and skill development, connections with others, and access to help. With limits and balance, these tools can offer meaningful experiences for children and youth, beyond their educational use. However, excessive screen use can impact your child’s mental health and well-being. It is important to consider your child's relationship with digital technology.

Tech use, Sleep and School Attendance
In a world where children are “growing up digital”, it is important to
help them learn about healthy digital use so that they are safe and
healthy, and so they are able to attend school regularly, on-time,
and ready to learn. Parents/ caregivers are especially important in
teaching these skills.

As we approach the festive season, Sacred Heart is filled with excitement and holiday cheer. The Atrium will soon be lit and decorated, bringing out the Christmas spirit in the community. We will also embrace the idea of giving and bringing joy during Christmas with our traditional Christmas Hamper program which supports families in the Sacred Heart community and in other schools.
High School students recently completed the OSSLT and we are looking forward to their successful results. High School Report Cards were made available on the Parent Portal and students are starting to prepare for their Exams/ RSTs after the Christmas Holidays. The High School Attendance Mailer will be communicated to parents next week as student attendance is the greatest indicator of success in courses.
In addition to the excitement of the holidays, we are also getting prepared for Advent, a time of reflection and preparation. Our Advent activities will include prayer services and service projects. We encourage all families to participate in our fundraising activities and to take some time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. We hope that you have a wonderful holiday season and a blessed Advent.
Christmas Hampers - Supporting Families
From Dec 3rd to Dec 12th we are running our Christmas Hamper and Gift Card Giveaway Campaign where we support families within our community.

High school homerooms are collecting gift cards of 5$ denominations or more to participate in the GRINCHY GIFT CARD GIVEAWAY. This is a new, fun activity to encourage students to bring in gift cards to provide our community families with autonomy. Students will receive more information about this fun-filled event on Tuesday, December 3rd.

Change: Monthly Attendance Reports
We are implementing a new monthly attendance reporting system at the end of November. Starting this week, all parents of 9-12 students will receive an email each month with their student's attendance information. This change aims to increase awareness of your child's attendance and facilitate conversations about any potential concerns. The communication is purely information to assist parents. No response is necessary.
We understand there are times when students should be away from school. Please remember to keep your child home when they are ill.
Review the monthly attendance report when you receive it. This information can be helpful when making decisions about your child's participation in activities outside of school.
We believe this change will enhance our partnership in supporting your child's success and well-being.

7/8 Parent-Teacher Interviews
Grade 7/8 Parent-Teacher Interviews are scheduled for Thursday, November 21. We will provide parents with options for scheduling a 10-minute conference about a student's progress in the course thus far. All interviews will be held in person at Sacred Heart.
Interviews are intended for students/parents seeking feedback to meet course expectations if there are present concerns.
Please note that it is not uncommon for our intermediate teachers to teach 150 students. If your child is progressing with difficulty in a course, then we encourage you to book an interview with the appropriate teacher. If your child is progressing well or very well, then an interview is not required.
The Learning Skills levels and comments are determined through the collaboration of all of your child's teachers - not just by the homeroom teacher. Should there be multiple N's and S's, then we encourage you to book.
The booking system will be shared and active Thursday, November 14 at 4:00pm. The booking system will close on Wednesday, November 20 at 12:00pm. The Parent Code for this term is 8music5. Do not share this code with anyone outside the school community.

Practicing Lockdowns as a School Community.
Please be aware that, each year, all OCSB schools practice Safe Schools procedures, including practicing lockdown drills. An emergency situation may develop within the school that prevents the safe and immediate evacuation of students and staff. We may need, for example, to allow police to move through the building without students in the halls. In such times, schools may initiate either a ‘secure school’ or a ‘school lockdown’ protocol. We will review these expectations this coming week with students and provide direction when practicing.
Morning Dropoffs - Plan Ahead
With winter weather looming - be sure to plan the morning drive with this in mind. 10 minutes early makes a major difference.
Just as you would plan to leave a bit earlier to attend an event at Canadian Tire Centre, the same idea is suggested if you intend on dropping your child off at school in morning. Timing an arrival for puck drop might not work on some nights...better to leave earlier.
The drop off routes work - if drivers understand we are a large community with over 2300 students!
Ottawa Student Transportation Authority has launched a user-friendly progressive web application to provide real-time updates about your child’s transportation status. With this app, you’ll receive timely alerts and notifications directly to your device via push notifications. It’s easy to set up, it’s free, and notifications are instant. The app will replace emails when it comes to weather cancellation notifications only; emails will still be circulated for delays, cancellations and other alerts. Click HERE to access the app.
A busy week lies ahead for the Sacred Heart community. We will host the Jr. Girls basketball finals on Monday @4:00pm as they play Louis Riel for the city championship. The video linked here is the final seconds of the Semi-Final game versus Nepean...which went to overtime!
Friday is a PD Day for all OCSB schools. There are no classes or transportation on this day.
High school report cards will be available on the Parent Portal on November 19th and Grade 7/8 progress reports will be posted on November 14th. Grade 10-12 students are currently preparing for the upcoming OSSLT.
I would again ask that you take a few moments, if you haven't already done so, to log into the Parent Portal and verify that your contact information is correct and up-to-date. It is very important, for many reasons, that we have correct contact information for parents/guardians. Please see this doc for instructions on how to complete the verification. Thank you for verifying your information.
9-12 Monthly Attendance Letters
At the end of each month we will send an attendance report to parents for students who have missed above 10% of classes in that month. There is no action item required for parents beyond receiving the report. This step is an attempt to provide parents with data to make informed decisions. We understand there are a variety of reasons why a student is absent - the report is simply meant to be informative.

Looking Ahead to Halloween
On October 31st, students are encouraged to dress up for Halloween and show their school spirit. When choosing costumes, it's important to ensure they are culturally sensitive and appropriate. Cultural appropriation—using elements from a culture that is not your own without understanding or respecting it—can lead to discomfort. With creativity, parents can guide their children in selecting thoughtful costumes. By being mindful, we can make sure Halloween remains a fun and inclusive event where all students feel respected and safe.
Parents: Sunday Night Conversations
As all students are well into their courses for this year, it is a good time to check in on their progress and plans to achieve success.
We encourage families to intentionally create time and space to ask some version of these questions. Conversations can be awkward at first, but students crave consistency and will likely respond if repeated.
Start of the Week:
What is one goal you'd like to focus on this week? Something for school, at home, or about how you interact with people?
What steps can you take/what habits can you work on to help you reach that goal?
How will you know if you reached the goal?
End of the Week:
Did you accomplish your goal this week?
What actions or behaviors helped you to meet your goal? How might these help in the future?
How did it feel to accomplish the goal?

Short weeks seem to be busier weeks in a school! Thanks to the parents who participated in the 9-12 Interviews with Semester 1 teachers. The best strategy to help students succeed is a team-based approach incorporating the feedback from teachers and wisdom from parents.
Looking ahead, the week of November 4 - 8 is Career Week at the OCSB. The Wednesday of that week, November 6, is Take Our Kids to Work Day for our Gr. 9 students, and LAUNCH for our Gr. 10 - 12 students. Both of these are amazing opportunities for rich career learning experiences.

Bus Driver Appreciation Day
October 23rd is Bus Driver Appreciation Day. Every day, our dedicated school bus and van drivers ensure that students travel safely to and from school. These drivers don't just provide transportation; they help create a positive and caring environment for students, offering peace of mind to parents and caregivers. We believe their hard work and commitment deserve to be acknowledged, and that's where you come in.
Please take a moment to fill out our Driver Recognition Form and tell us about a driver who has made a difference. Your input helps us recognize their efforts and is a meaningful way to show your appreciation.
Looking Ahead to Halloween
On October 31st, students are invited to dress up for Halloween and show their school spirit. As tempting as it may be for our students to dress in pretty much anything they want to be, it is important to consider a more thoughtful approach about whether the costume is culturally sensitive and appropriate. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, cultural appropriation is, “the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect the culture.” Halloween is a fun event and with some creativity and imagination, parents can help their child(ren) choose a costume that aligns with a culturally sensitive Halloween. Being proactive can help all of us to avoid uncomfortable situations at school and in our community and can help us ensure that Halloween is a fun event where all students feel safe and honoured.

Final Assessments – Exams and RSTs – School Year Calendar
Grade 9 - 12 students’ examinations and Rich Summative Tasks (RSTs) WILL NOT be rescheduled for holiday or travel convenience, and all appointments should be scheduled so as not to conflict with exams and RSTs. If a medical problem arises, a Vice Principal must be contacted prior to the exam or RST. Medical certificates will be required to permit alternate arrangements for final examinations in these cases.
Students and Parents/Guardians can refer to the OCSB website for the Grade 9 - 12 calendar. These calendars identify the first and last day of school, PD days, Statutory Holidays, Board Holidays, and High School exams. As a general rule, it is prudent to avoid any planned student absences during the months of January and June as this is when RSTs and exams are scheduled.
Grade 12 Post-Secondary Assemblies
Student Services will host two assemblies for Grade 12 students on Tuesday, October 8th:
Period 1: College-bound students

7-12 Early Dismissal for Parent Teacher Interviews
- Thursday, October 17
All students (7-12) are dismissed for the day at 1:10pm
Transportation is adjusted to the new time. OC Transpo may or may not adjust their schedule.
Interviews are only for 9-12 students
All interviews are in person at Sacred Heart.
Attendance Really Matters
For their best chance for academic success, all students need to be in their seats and ready to learn when the bell rings.
We are encouraging students to arrive at school no later than 7:55 am to be on time for class. We understand many students take the yellow school bus which means this can be out of their control. This will give students enough time to sort out what they need at their lockers and get to class before the bell rings.
Please discuss this at home. Some students might need support developing strategies to get out the door early enough to be here on time.
Consistent attendance is essential to educational success.

You can follow this link to learn more about OCSB Connect.

Next week we run for the cure of Cancer.

Student Activity Fee:
At Sacred Heart, we attempt to provide students with unique and interesting opportunities to connect to the school inside and outside of the classroom. Securing opportunities for initiatives such as guest speakers, supplies for student activities and rentals require additional support. The student activity fee is $30/student or $60/family payable via School Cash Online. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Signing Out:
When your child needs to leave school early, the quickest and most efficient way is to send them to school with a written note. The note should include the date, time of departure, your child's name, and your signature. Your child will:
Show the note to their teacher at the start of the class they will leave early from.
Leave class with time to collect their things and check out at the office.
Give the note to the Office Administrator, who will record it.
This process eliminates the need to call the office. Please be aware that if your child is leaving during their lunch period or gym class, we cannot contact them, so notes are crucial in these cases. We also discourage any sign outs after 1:45 pm.

We seem to have hit our stride! Thanks to all parents for helping support students in the transition back to school. Many teams and clubs have started. It's really important for students to check the daily announcements to find out when and where things are taking place outside of the regular classroom. We know the more involved a student is in activities connected to the school, the more likely they will find success in the classroom.

One week down! Week one done!
We hope you are hearing stories of reconnecting, new friends, new classes and the ways your young person is going to connect to Sacred Heart this year. As things settle over the next week, we encourage parents to initiate conversations about 'connecting' goals for this year. Which club are you interested in? Which team are you going to try out for?
We are very impressed with how students have responded to the new cell phone expectations implemented across Ontario. This new direction gives teachers the ability to structure learning in a meaningful way.

Cell Phones and Mobile Devices
We are hopeful the new expectations for cell phone/mobile device use in schools across Ontario will yield a more productive and focused learning environment for students. The 75 minutes (9-12) and 50 minutes (7-8) are now more easily structured for teachers to plan for learning and engagement - this is a very good step.
Students who learn with identified needs supported by technology, or who have health accommodations will be supported in their learning.
Parents/Guardians can contact their child during the school day by calling the main office. Contacting your child during class time distracts them from their school work and the needed in-person interaction with their peers and educators. If your child needs to contact you during the school day, they can access a phone in the school office
And so it begins!
On Tuesday, we will open the doors of Sacred Heart for the 25th "First Day" in our history to over 2350 students and close to 200 staff. A new year brings new possibilities and opportunities for students to grow and explore as they work towards becoming a high school graduate.
To our new students and new families, welcome to Sacred Heart. We are truly the heart of Stittsville and are eager to have you be part of the community.
To our returning families, welcome back. Your continued presence and support is appreciated as we continue the good work in helping students.
Expectations for 7-8 Students
Students are expected to store any phone/mobile device/earphones in their locker.
Teachers will provide advanced notice if/when a device will be used for learning
Students will be free to receive texts/calls at lunch 11:42am-12:22pm, as well as before and after school.
