This year's Gr. 9 Business Technology students from St. Joe's decided to donate any profits made from their button making business to Mateo's Legacy, which supports the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern Ontario. Mateo Aceval, a former classmate of these students, died from cancer in 2017, and many of our students have been involved with Mateo's Legacy since then. Through their efforts in designing, producing, and selling personalized buttons, keychains, and magnets, students from three Business Technology classes were able to raise a total of $1,250 to donate to the foundation. Some of our students attended a memorial for Mateo on June 16, 2019 and presented the cheque to Mateo's mother. We are extremely proud of the work that our students have done in reaching out to the greater community and working towards such a meaningful cause.
Last Saturday, this group of students plus six others participated in the Run for Women's Race Day at Lebreton Flats with 3200 other young girls from across the city. Thanks so much to phys. ed. teacher Jen Elliott for alerting me to this. Way to go, Jags!
Last Friday our High Needs' class joined students from St. Mother Teresa High School at the Barrhaven Cineplex for movie day where they enjoyed Secret Life of Pet 2. Thanks to Ms. Houston for organizing this exciting event and to all the EA's who helped out with the logistics and with supervision. I spoke to a few students after who expressed that they had a a really nice time. This day celebrates our one of Board's strategic commitments of Be Community.
As this is my final blog for the 2018-19 school year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank St. Joseph's students, staff, and parent community for the support and commitment that they have shown this past year. A special thank you to our School Council for the support that they have demonstrated. I wish everyone a restful and relaxing summer and, as the song goes, See You in September...

We ask parents who are dropping of their children in the morning to be mindful of how they are parking in the lot behind the school. Staff are often arriving at the same time and having parents park carefully will help ensure that school staff are able to park and that students are safe and not at risk of getting injured. Also, we ask that drivers not stop in the main thoroughfare of the parking lot nor park in the main thoroughfare at the end of the day as traffic flow is being impeded.
Thank you for your co-operation. in keeping things running smoothly at St. Joe's.

As part of student assessment and evaluation, the Ministry of Education stipulates that courses (grades 9-12) contain a formal Rich Summative Task or Assessment as part of the summative evaluation of a semester’s work. This RST is “An authentic activity, exercise, problem, or challenge that requires students to show what they know and what they can do. Performance tasks lead students to demonstrate their understanding by applying knowledge and skills to real-life situations or scenarios. Performance tasks usually address all four categories of the achievement chart and multiple overall curriculum expectations and provide flexibility in how students can demonstrate their learning” (Ontario Ministry of Education, Growing Success p. 153).
As part of this expected component of classroom evaluation, RST dates are made clear to students as part of the course expectations. As with final exams, RST dates are communicated with students ahead of time, and the expectation is that all students schedule outside appointments and other activities around these dates. For further information, please contact your child’s teacher.

On Thursday, May 16, nine St Joe's girls participated in a focus group to discuss the reasons why female enrolment/interest in STEM is low, particularly in computer programming and engineering.
Along with Mr. Belanger, the girls traveled to BlackBerry/QNX in Kanata North. They were able to view the research lab for driverless car technology and spoke to leading scientists in the industry.
The focus group was led by software development project leaders and our students provided great insight and perspective. With the exception of Mr Belanger, this was an all-girl event and was both constructive and inspiring. Way to go, girls!

In Mrs. MacLean's Gr. 8 Language class, students were treated to a "Book Tasting" at Cafe MacLean to kick-start their Eric Walters Choice-Based Unit. The students were given a "taste" or exposure to books they may not have selected for themselves. The purpose was to encourage, excite, and motivate the students. At the end of their experience, each student selected a "main" book to use for their upcoming choice-based activities.

On Wednesday we had a very successful grad retreat at Saunders' Farm. The weather held out for us, giving grads a chance to bond and get to know each other better before final exams begin. Soon, the class of 2019 will walk the stage, receiving their diplomas. Where has time gone?
It was Speak Easy Day in Ms. Stokes' History class the other day. The students channeled their inner 20’s vibe and, as you can see, really dressed the part. There is always something experiential and interesting to see in Ms. Stokes' classes, held in the furthest portable at St. Joe's. Soon "portableland" will be much smaller when shovels go into the ground in August in order to build us a much-needed addition.

Congrats to Ms. Jennings and the entire drama cast and crew for an excellent performance of the whodunnit Murder's in the Heir. In this murder mystery, the audience became a part of the action as they voted through a secret ballot who they wanted to see as the killer. The cast then performed the unique ending live. With all this interaction, an excellent time was had by everyone.

The image of the empty tomb is a strong symbol for Jesus' commitment to His mission here on earth. It became a symbol of shame for those who had persecuted Jesus, for they were left with the undeniable truth of His consistent message. Jesus' followers, who all seemed to be at various points of belief, were rewarded by the discovery of His empty tomb on Easter morning. The stories and prophecies He had preached had all come true. As we journey through the season of Easter, may our abilities, talents, and relationships be strengthened by the example of Jesus.
It was announced at a previous Board meeting that we will be losing vice-principal Mr. Ryan Jolicoeur. Mr. Jolicoeur will be moving to St. Mother Teresa High School in September. Ryan was taking over for Ms. Stacy Hovey who was on a maternity leave. Ms. Hovey will not be returning to us either, as she will resume her vp role at Holy Trinity High School. In Mr. Jolicoeur's/Ms. Hovey's place we will be acquiring Ms. Jennifer Peppler, a vice-principal currently at Sacred Heart High School. So, all this to say...welcome to our newest Jag, Ms. Jennifer Peppler!

We’re excited to announce the call for application for the 2019–2020 EQAO Student Advisory Committee. This committee will be one of our key sources for student voice in the agency’s activities. We also meet with student trustees, and staff engage student focus groups from time to time. This will be the second year of the Student Advisory Committee. The other committees within our governance structure are the EQAO Advisory Committee, the Modernization in Measurement Advisory Panel and the Equity Council.
Students are the focus of EQAO’s work, and we value learners’ perspectives on everything that we do. As EQAO seeks to continuously improve its programs, we want to ensure that students’ experiences are informing our thinking.
EQAO celebrates student diversity across the province, and our approach to open dialogue welcomes all viewpoints. When selecting committee members, we’ll ensure a diverse representation of students’ experiences and perspectives. We’ll also look for students who demonstrate a passion for effecting change in their communities and who have a desire to make a difference—either through their actions or through their ideas.
To learn more about the previous committee’s work, visit EQAO’s website.
Please find attached an invitation to students, which outlines eligibility criteria, and the application form for this opportunity. Submissions must be received by May 10, 2019, and selections will be announced by the end of May 2019.

Infinity Convention Centre,
This week marks Holy Week in the Roman Catholic Liturgical Calendar. Following weeks of personal reflection through Lent, we are asked to consider the importance of Jesus Christ’s ultimate sacrifice to free us from the bonds of sin. While this is a Christian belief, we have spent much time these last 40 days drawing parallels to the inner reflection encouraged by multiple faiths. Reviewing our spiritual direction and setting personal goals for ourselves relates directly to what we are working on academically as well. The steps to strengthening our faith are similar to those that clarify our academic direction. To be able to draw connections between our spiritual and personal development and our academic growth is one of the gifts of an education in the Catholic system. I wish all of our families peace as you journey through this solemn period.

There is some discussion that High School students in Ontario are planning a walkout protest this Thursday at 1:15 p.m. The Ottawa Catholic School Board acknowledges that students have the right to participate in peaceful protests. The role of the school staff during a student organized political protest is to ensure student safety and work to minimize classroom disruption for those that choose not to participate in any type of protest, including walkouts. Those who leave class to protest or who do not return to class after the protest will be marked as absent.

Dear Parent(s).
If you have a daughter enrolled at St. Joseph High School she will have received a letter and an informed consent form several weeks ago to take home to discuss with her parent(s)/guardian. The letter explains a research study (led by researchers at Brock University and approved by the board and principal) that your daughter has been invited to participate in about girls’ motivation and participation in physical activity and sport. I am e-mailing to remind you of this opportunity and kindly ask that you discuss it with your daughter, consider her participation in it, and arrange to have your daughter return the consent form in a sealed envelope to the school office as soon as possible. Your daughter’s participation in this study is completely voluntary and, if you or she wishes, she can decline to participate in any component of the study (or to withdraw from the study at any time) without any penalty. If you need another copy of the invitation letter and consent form, please have your daughter drop by the main office to get one. Thank you. Ken Lodewyk, Ph.D
When: May 4, 2019 9am to 4pm
Where: University of Ottawa, Desmarais Hall, DMS 12102, 55 Laurier Avenue East, Ottawa, ON
Cost: $30 (lunch included)
Topics include;
FEATURE PRESENTERS:
Judy van Stralen MD, FRCPC
Dr. van Stralen is a community-based consulting pediatrician. She completed her medical degree at McMaster University and pediatric residency training at Queen’s University. Dr. van Stralen is the founder and medical director of the Center for Pediatric Excellence, a multi-disciplinary clinic focused on treating patients with mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders. She is also a consultant at Children’s Mental Health of Leeds and Grenville, Assistant Professor at Queen’s University and Staff Pediatrician at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
Maria A. Rogers Ph.D., C.Psych
Dr. Rogers is an Associate Professor, Clinical Psychologist, and Director of the ADHD and Development Lab at the University of Ottawa. She is also an Affiliate Investigator at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Dr. Rogers’ broad interests are in the social-emotional and academic development of youth with ADHD across the childhood and adolescent period. She is particularly interested in how parents and teachers interact with children with ADHD regarding learning and school-related issues, and the effects of these interactions on children’s emotional well-being.
Ms. Carter-Rae bought Praying In Color for her 7/8 Religion department. She tried the concepts presented with her class for the first time this past week. Students were completely absorbed in the lessons and produced the most beautiful pieces. Some of them became quite emotional and every single one of them said they want to do it again. The book’s author says, “Drawing is half the prayer, the other half is transporting the visual memories or actual images with you to pray throughout the day." I'm so pleased Ms . Carter-Rae shared this so that I could, in turn, inform our community.

I'd like to welcome back our entire St. Joe's family from March Break. I hope everyone had a chance to rest and recharge. We now look forward to, hopefully, warmer weather and, with it, lots more happening at our great school. Keep tuned to this Blog to stay on top of all that is St. Joe's Catholic High School.
The photos below show Ms. Roumeliotis' High Needs' class visiting Loblaws just prior to the Break. The students cut, chopped, shredded and learned how to use small kitchen appliances. They were also able to make quesadillas and smoothies. Yum...way to go, Jags!

These awesome grade 9 students went to the Royal Ottawa where they, along with Ms. Elliott, met with over a dozen other teachers from Ottawa to discuss the Run For It program which uses running as a means to help cope with mental illness. These girls will be the Ambassadors to help promote the program at St. Joe’s. They will go through a 6-week training program and on June 14th, all participants from across the city will run the 5km together .
Students in grades 9-12, a week before the Break, and in 7/8 the Thursday before the Break, participated in a Hoops For Hearts basketball tournament that raised over $600 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Congratulations on a job well done.
Ms. Elliott and 13 students from grades 7-12 met with representatives from Physical and Health Education Canada to plan the new intramural program we will be implementing, one designed by girls for girls in the hopes of increasing female participation during our school activities. This is a partnership with Brock University. We are hoping to see some interesting results and ideas.
Students in Ms. Fedorowicz's English class debate whether the “shape of society depends on the ethical nature of the individual and not on any political system.” (William Golding). They must use examples from Lord of the Flies, an article “Power and Authority”, history or the current world. In addition to debates that take place in classes here at St. Joe's, we also have an thriving extra-curricular debating club run by Ms. Stokes.

Our girls' hockey team suffered a loss to St. Mark in the finals on Tuesday. Three busloads of students, including our band, made the trip to the game to cheer the girls on. Despite the loss, we are so proud of our girls for making it as far as they did. Way to go, Jags...next year is right around the corner!!!
Kaira Plourde, our City of Ottawa nurse, spoke to all students on Wednesday on the topic of vaping. Many students told me that they found the assembly really informative. I think one take-away that struck many was the idea that vaping can lead to tobacco. The nicotine in some vaping products is, of course, addictive. Vapes are expensive; hence, when one possibly gets addicted to nicotine via vaping and wants a less expensive source, tobacco may prove to be an alternative.
Dear Parent(s).
If you have a daughter enrolled at St. Joseph High School she will have recently received a letter and an informed consent form to take home to discuss with her parent(s)/guardian. The letter explains a research study that your daughter has been invited to participate in about girls’ motivation and participation in physical activity and sport. The study is lead by a professor at Brock University and has been approved by the school principal, school board, and Brock's research ethics board.
We would like to let you know about this invitation and kindly ask that you discuss it with your daughter, consider her participation in it, and arrange to have your daughter return the consent form into the large white confidential envelope that each teacher has in their classroom for collecting consent forms. Your daughter’s participation in this study is completely voluntary and, if you or she wishes, she can decline to participate in any component of the study (or to withdraw from the study at any time) and may do so without any penalty. Please read letter and consent form that your daughter received for more details about the study (there are extra copies in the school office). Thank you for considering this opportunity.
Sincerely,
Dr. Ken Lodewyk (Lead Researcher) at Brock University
Wednesday was a busy day. in the afternoon, after the vaping assemblies, we had our Course Display in the Atrium. Here, students had the opportunity to see all the great course offerings at St. Joe's as they choose their timetables for September, 2019.
The night before was our Parent Information Night. Ms. Angelina Glynn (vp) and I spoke to the grade 6 parents of students entering grade 7. I set up 700 chairs and all were full. Given that there were roughly 100 at the grade 8 session and another 100 at the upper-grade session, our turn-out for the evening was 900-1000. That's incredible! It was great to see so many members of our community come out to hear all the great things happening here. We certainly are growing at an incredible rate!
We are so proud of grade 11 student Sagni Kuma. Sagni is the new student trustee for the 2019-20 school year at the Ottawa Catholic School Board. The competition for this was fierce as Sagni had to compete with representatives from every high school and then go through three rounds of speeches and interviews. We are so proud to have one of our own represent the interests of students at the Board. Congratulations, Sagni...way to go!
In honour of Black History Month, we had a celebratory buy-out on Thursday. Over 500 students attended a spectacular gathering celebrating black history in Canada. This is the first year we tried having this in the morning. It was such a success we will likely do the same next year. A special thanks goes to teacher Emily Scholfield and student Dani Akat for taking care of all the logistics.
As March 11-15 is March Break, there will be no Blog publication during this time. Whether travelling or staying around our great city, I'd like to wish everyone in our community a safe and restful March Break. School resumes on Monday, March 18.

Please pray for, and cheer on, our girls' hockey team as they are in the finals!! The game takes place this coming Tuesday at noon against St. Mark. We are organizing fan buses to take students to the game to give the most support we can. We got this, girls!!!!! You'll make the provincials for sure.....we have your backs!
The photos below show our Jags at First Avenue Public School at the 9th Robotics and Engineering Challenge. Three-quarters of our teams won, or placed, out of eight teams in the intermediate challenge. This is incredibly impressive, especially given the fact that the majority of our students were new to the concept of EV3 programming. Special thanks goes to teacher Ms. Sarah Murray for making all of this possible.
Ice breaking operations on the Rideau River start between Rideau Falls and Hog’s Back. Ice blasting will follow in the coming weeks, weather permitting.
The City, in partnership with the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, undertakes ice breaking operations each year to alleviate possible spring flooding in flood-prone areas. Once started, these operations will be carried out daily, weather and ice conditions permitting.
Ice breaking operations will create open water. Residents are reminded to keep away from the river until operations are completed, and to always supervise children around water.
Visit Ottawa.ca for more information regarding Rideau River flood control.

Don't forget that this coming Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. is our information night. This will be of particular interest to families of students going into grade 7, grade 9, and the senior grades (11 and 12). All are welcome so please join us.
Ms. Elliott's grade 9 girls' phys. ed. class enjoyed some awesome workout activities at GoodLife Fitness this week. At St. Joe's, we really enjoy partnering with our surrounding community, supporting the business' that make up our wonderful home of Barrhaven.
Ms. Elliott's students ran the Winter Fun Day at St. Mary's, running three different stations as the students rotated between curling, pin the carrot on the snowman and the sliding hill. Way to go, Jags, for your awesome participation!

The above photos and one to the left are from Ms. Stokes' grade 10 History class. Here, they are learning about Imperialism in a collaborative format that really brings excitement to learning. Collaboration is a skill many employers look for and it starts right here at St. Joe's!

Hot off the press are these great City of Ottawa resources on cannabis and vaping. As a school, we are also having grade assemblies on Feb. 27 on the dangers of vaping and how vaping can actually lead one to cigarettes. February is Black History Month. We have a number of student-led activities occurring at St. Joe's to recognize this important event. I will update the Blog with photos as things unfold. Here is a link to various events happening in the Ottawa area:
St Joe's Business RST assignments have demonstrated how we can reach out to those in need. Each course involved an end of the semester assignment where the proceeds would be donated to a worthy charity, selected by the students. A total of $1400 was raised through these Business activities.
In BTT 1O (Info Tech), students in Mrs King's classes created buttons, magnets and keychains through the use of graphic design, and sold them. The Cerebral Palsy Foundation and Mateo's Legacy for Make A Wish received a total of $480.
In Mr Mullally's grade 11 Entrepreneurship class, students had produced Jag Joy Bags for sale before Christmas. Each bag included Chocolates, a chocolate cookie mix, a tree ornament, and a decorative candle. Their inventory sold out and they raised $303 for the Barrhaven Food Cupboard.
In Mr. Belanger's grade 10 Business class, the annual Lemonade Stand raised $617 to be shared by CHEO, the Capital City Condors, the SPCA (Humane Society), Children's Wish Foundation and the Shepherds of Good Hope.
We are tremendously proud of the students' hard work, determination and generosity. Way to go, Jags!

High School exams will be written on January 23rd, 24th, 25th, and 28th. In the event of a snow day during the high school exam period, exam schedules at all schools for all students will be affected (not just for school bus riders).
In the event of a “snow day” where yellow school bus transportation is cancelled during the high school exam period, the missed exam will be written the following day.
All other exams will be bumped by one day and the last exam, scheduled for Monday, January 28th will be written on Tuesday, January 29th. During a snow day, the school will be open, but exams will not be written.
For example, if January 23rd is a snow day and all school bus transportation for our board is cancelled, then:
All exams originally scheduled for January 23rd will be written on January 24th.
All exams originally scheduled for January 24th will be written on January 25th.

Mr. Berry's grade 11 Physics class worked on acceleration using some very precise equipment purchased by the school over a number of years. Students were amazed at the accuracy of the equipment and the preciseness of measurements involved.
Getting Ready for Exams
Here is a photo of the LINK Team, under the supervisions of Ms. White, preparing exam survival kits for grade 9 students who will be writing exams for the first time. We wish all high school students well as they head into the exam period next on Wednesday.
Ms. MacLean's grade 8 Language class welcomed Jamaal The Poet in order to explore the wonders of poetry. Using the current Media unit, “Heroes and Idols” as a base, students were inspired to explore the urban art of spoken word poetry. The creativity and bravery that the students demonstrated in their words was truly inspiring.
These are photos of Ms. Licandro's grade 7 Math class working on a measurement unit. Objects were chosen around the third floor and the classroom for students to measure. The activity was to work in pairs and estimate the length of each object and then actually measure it to see how close they were. Students really enjoyed this interactive activity.
Parenting in Ottawa’s Facebook page is a great resource for parents. Every day a new topic is presented and a nurse is available to answer questions and private messages (during business hours). Jan.23 will be a day devoted to vaping. We realize this is an issue of concern for many parents and schools alike. This will be a great opportunity for parents and educators to engage with our guest with questions or to just simply join the conversation and gain new insights.
I can be reached personally at don.murphy@ocsb.ca. The school's general mailbox address is Joseph.High@ocsb.ca. Our OCSB Trustee is Spencer Warren who can be reached at spencer.warren@ocsb.ca
Have a great week!
