Welcome to 6th Grade!
Welcome to the 2019- 2020 school year here at Ishi Hills! We are delighted to have your child in our 6th grade classes. Our curriculum is based on the new Common Core State Standards for English-Language Arts and Mathematics, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). We anticipate an exciting and academically challenging school year. We invite you to join in partnership with support of your child’s educational progress. I will be teaching your student History and Language Arts throughout the school year.
I expect each student to arrive at school organized and prepared to work. Please be sure that your child comes to school each day with the following:
- Binder with dividers
- Folders for each subject
- Binder paper and lots of it throughout the year!
- Pencils (lots and lots)
- Handheld pencil sharpener
- Notebook dedicated for history
- Colored pencils, markers, scissors, white glue
The following is an outline of curriculum goals, absences, assignments, homework, and grading:
This year we will continue implementing the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts and Mathematics. The CCSS offer students exciting and challenging shifts in their learning. The CCSS directly applies to History and Technology as well. There is a greater emphasis on reading informational texts, working in collaborative groups, and speaking and listening. Written communication has a focus on argumentation, making claims and citing supportive evidence, and explanation. Of course, effective communication requires careful attention to grammar and mechanics of writing.
It is crucial that your child is present daily to learn because much of what we do is dynamic and cannot be replicated easily at home. If your child is absent, we will do our best to gather his or her absent work and make it available as soon as possible. It is your student’s responsibility to collect and complete the assignments s/he has missed. Each teacher will inform students at the beginning of the year of these policies and where the student will be able to locate absent assignments in each classroom.
As a general rule, if a student is absent for two days, then s/he may have two days to complete the work. After the two days, the work becomes incomplete and will no longer be accepted for full credit, please see late work policy below.
Tests, quizzes, and projects will be scored on a 100-point system. We expect all work to be of the highest quality, neat, legible, fulfilling the requirements of the assignment, and on time. Late work will receive a 10% reduction in points for each day late. Note: After 1 week, the work will be incomplete and will no longer be accepted. A grade of F will be recorded. Please speak to me if you foresee any upcoming issues. Please remember that as a school policy, we reserve two weeks to record work into the Aeries gradebook. We reserve the ability to choose what assignments are recorded as not all assignments will be entered into the gradebook.
Papers turned in with no name will be put in a no name bin. It is the student’s responsibility to check their student/parent portal regarding missing assignments and grades. Teachers will check and grade at the earliest convenience. These papers will be considered late. The no name folders will be emptied the week after the quarter ends.
Grading Scale: 90.00% - 100.00% = A 80.00% - 89.99% = B 70.00% - 79.99% = C 60.00% - 69.99% = D 50.00% - 59.99% = F

- Show respect to persons and property
- Follow directions
- Work at an appropriate noise level
- Use class time wisely
- Be prepared and on time for class including homework and supplies
- Exit and enter class quietly and without disruption
- Keep a positive attitude and be willing to learn☺
All Students will be receiving an Ishi Hills Handbook that covers our school discipline procedures.Your child will receive the handbook on the first day of school. Please review the handbook with your child so that expectations are understood by all parties involved in helping your student to be successful.
If a student chooses inappropriate behavior, the following steps will be taken:
Level A- Verbal warning and parent notification
Level B- 1 lunch detention and parent notification
Level C- 1 lunch detention and parent notification
Level D- 1 lunch detention and parent meeting
Please be assured that our goal is to work with parents and families in ways that I would want my child’s teacher to work with me. I appreciate your insights regarding your child. To contact a teacher, you may send a note with your child, leave a message at the office (532-3078). We will make every effort to respond as soon as possible. We will have parent/teacher conferences in November.
The best way to contact your child’s teachers is through email as we occasionally have time to check them throughout the day.
