New Year, New Policies
by Spartan Spirit Staff
As the new school year gets underway at OTHS, students are already noticing some significant changes designed to boost academic focus and classroom engagement. This year, the school has implemented two major policies: limiting the number of students in the hallways during class time and requiring students to turn in their cell phones at the start of each class block. Both initiatives are part of a district-wide effort to create a more focused learning environment.
In the first few weeks, the impact of these policies has been largely positive. Teachers report that students are more engaged during lessons, with fewer distractions from their devices. Many teachers describe this policy shift as a "game-changer."
The policy limiting hallway traffic has also helped maintain a more productive atmosphere. In past years, it was common to see students lingering in the hallways long after the bell rang, but this year, hallways are noticeably quieter. Students are required to have a pass to be out during class, and there’s a limit to how many students can leave at once. As a result, teachers have seen fewer interruptions in their classrooms, allowing them to stay on track with their lessons.
While some students were initially apprehensive about giving up their phones for the duration of class, many are starting to appreciate the difference it makes. As the school year continues, the administration plans to gather feedback from students and staff on how the policies are working and whether any adjustments are needed. For now, though, it seems that these changes are helping to foster a better learning environment for everyone.
When asked about the progress of the cell phone policy so far, Principal Kaszuba responded with this statement: "I cannot thank our Spartans--students and staff--for their adjustment to the new cell phone policy! Together they are creating classroom environments that are more engaging, more focused, and more successful--with everyday opportunities for real, person-to-person interaction and genuine, productive conversation; outside of classrooms, this change is even impacting the cafeteria and hallways. We are re-discovering the power of human connection--and THAT is the beauty of this school--our Spartans!
With a renewed focus on participation and a quieter, more focused school environment, it looks like this year is off to a strong start.
